Hi i have been a long time reader of these forums so have decided to join.
well my first car it has a raging 1.2 under the bonnet, has no luxuries like abs, central locking or electrical anything. it has faithfully transported me around the country for the last year and a half and is remarkably fun for something so underpowered.
anyway some pictures:

it certainly isn't the most exotic car there is about but it has served its purpose admirably.
I am hoping to be in a position to replace it in the next few months for something less practical and more fun.

Thanks it rattles along well enough, for a free car it isn't bad. as for the plan to upgrade I have saved just over 3k towards a new car would ideally like to spend less than this. insurance isn't included in that I would be looking at something that is "fun" for that price range. insurance is obviously an issue due to age but other than that no idea.

for that sort of price range i would be thinking along the lines of a BMW range

IE

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1506833.htm 2k which leaves 1k for insurance

May not be the type of motor your after though

I would also recommend a MX-5 or if you want a BMW badge get a compact.

Could have put money on someone suggesting an MX-5, the only uncertainty was who'd say it first!

(Probably me if I'd seen the thread earlier.)

Thanks for the replies. the linked bmw looks like a nice place to be and would be a step up in both comfort/power but i think an mx5 sounds ideal now to go browse the classifieds smile
Edited to add: the insurance is coming out of a separate fund so that isn't included.

Get a 106 Rallye for your next car. Plenty of time to move into BMW's. I will second the Compact idea as your first BMW.

Good little cars, I had an 8v one as my first motor.. cheap, safe and reliable (at least mine was!)

An MX5/compact isn't really an option unless you fancy spending a big slice on insurance.

Stick to something FWD but with more power and sorted suspension I'd say, Civic 1.6 sport?

Perhaps a non turbo MR2? http://pistonheads.com/sales/1352635.htm

Although insurance will probably cost an absolute fortune

There is a lot of good advice in this thread and all input is much appreciated. I have resigned myself to the fact that any car is going to be a fair wad of cash on insurance, but since i have very little to spend money on other than a new car why not? the civic and rallye sound like two good choices, I had never really thought about either of them i shall have to go find out some more info.

The Clio has finally gone and I have found the car to replace it, this car came in significantly under budget and is fun to drive although it still wont set the world alight. I decided out of the many choices in the thread so far the most rational one to go for would be the 106. I at first started searching for a rallye but they are as rare as rocking horse st in this part of the country. so i found a low miles completely standard 106 quiksilver which fit the bill perfectly and here she is:

Well done.

the insurance is only £100 a year more which is reasonable i think and it is nice to have electric windows powersteering etc.
