Hello everyone, first post. Am currently in the market for a hot hatch, something to use a daily driver, but with the option of the occasional trackday being kept open. Have narrowed down my search to either a Renaultsport Clio Trophy or a post 2004 ep3 Civic type R. Have been studying the plus and minus points of owning either one and really cannot decide which i should buy. Anyone got a opinion? Thanks, Joe

I have only driven a 172. It was excellent, however seemed to have been bluetacked together, the poor workmanship was inexcusable IMO

Not driven a Clio but have a Type R.

I believe it boils down to

Civic - Better build, gearbox and engine.

Clio - Better steering feel / Handling.

Also depends the best you can buy for the money you have available.

Owned a 172 cup...and a trophy.

I just don't like the looks of the CTR in either guise. Just doesn't do it for me.

Both great cars...but for me, trophy.

Had a Trophy followed by a DC2 teg.

All in all the Clio was probably the faster car, but I found it really quite civilized. Verging on boring. The engine note is uninspiring, pretty dull interior, and poor seating position.

DC2 had fantastic engine, great gear change, good brakes, good inteior and seating position and the harder you drove it the better it got. At first it all seems a bit vague. Could get a bit tiring though at motorway speeds, as at about 70 I think it was about 4000rpm.

Tbh, I was happy with both of them, but just prefered the Teg for being a bit more silly.

Type r is great. The only negative is the steering is a bit vague and sometimes the power assistance can't keep up. The Renault is probably more fun on track.

I would have the Type R as it's the better all round proposition and will probably hold it's value better. Just don't modify it and get one with Recaro seats an AC in black or met grey.

Thank you everyone for a response! Was leaning towards the ctr anyway, on the grounds of better build quality and generally being a better ownership prospect. However i was put off by the many complaints about the steering feel that i have come across, hence searching for a post 2004 'facelifted' model which was to understand had tweaks to suspension and steering in an effort to rectify the problem, anyone know if there was any real noticeable difference made? if not i'll get a slightly older one-cheaper.
Money wise was looking to spend no more than £8k which would easily buy a trophy with 15-30k on the clock or a post 04 ctr with 30-60k.

For your budget I'd got for an Integra DC2 type R or maybe clio trophy.

Make sure you drive a good dc2 integra before committing to a civic.
