Hi Guys,

Anyone who cares to follow knows that I have a FIAT Punto 1.2 ELX at the moment - well, electrical gremlins have put paid to the enjoyment of driving it as it was becoming less economical to own frown.

So at the weekend I went with the parents (good haggling skills between them) and had a look around some local Ford garages and decided to take a test drive of a 2006 1.6 Zetec 5dr Climate.

The car ticked all the right boxes so purchased with the intention of part-exchanging the Punto and I am now like a little kid waiting for Christmas when I can go and pick the car up this Saturday.

I will be posting up some photo's once I have it back home. woohoo

I drive a lot of hire cars owing to travelling on business and i have to say the Focus 1.6 petrol is a really sweet car. Not powerful or overtly sporty, but a fantastic blend of ride and body control, great turn in and feedback to the driver makes it very satisfying to drive.

I've preferred it to almost every other hire car i've ever had. The 1.6 petrol also benefits from having hydraulic rather than electric power steering too i believe which is why the feedback is so superb.

Enjoy it.

Cheers,
Rob

Hi Rob,

Cheers for the info - On the test drive it felt so much more planted and more responsive than my Punto that getting back into my car felt odd. The car i'm getting is a really nice example (no scratches on the alloys, paintwork in good nick). 19,000 miles on an 06 plate which I thought was quie good. thumbup

Edit to Add: Gear change was my favourite feature on the test drive. Miles better and really nice to use.

My girlfriends just brought a new car for herself due to getting fed up with her Punto going wrong on her.

Before I post what I'm about to post I need to say something; this is not a malicious post, I'm not having a go, I'm not taking the piss and I'm not having a go at your car.

I think the Fiesta is nice car. Okay?

There's some really interesting stuff in Readers Cars, sexy new metal, restorations and mental projects, one of my favourite bits of the site. My classic Mini restoration is in here somewhere, my 1.2 Renault Clio is not. I just wonder why people (not just you) post pictures of their commonly seen daily drivers in here, is that what Readers Cars is really about?

Sorry if I've (inevitably) offended you, just wondering that's all?

Might be because they're proud of their car, even if it's not exotic metal it still means alot to them and they'd like to show it off. Some people might not give 2 shiny shi*es about your classic mini but you still posted it didn't you, why? Because you're proud to own it?. I don't think many people cared about my Skoda but i still posted pics of it.

Spot on AndyKH. Also to add that some people only have one car, and a car is a luxury not a necessity to some people. And their needs might well dictate what type of car they drive.

Spot on chaps, If anything, I prefer reading threads that say "This is my first car, done 20k in a year just driving it anywhere!
Rather than "this is my resale red Ferrari 360, i've done 1,600 miles since i bought it 2 years ago."

Aaaand, it's like someone showing you a picture of their baby, and it is SERIOUSLY ugly, you don't say "ergh, i'd rather not see that thing"

MiniMan64: I can see your POV - The Punto was my first car so couldn't have anything flash and as it was to be used as my daily hack, I couldn't go out and buy a restoration job (which ironically, it almost turned out to be hehe).

The focus is just a further step on from my daily requirements and as it is a new car, i'm just as excited as I would be if I were picking up something special.

As said above, no offecnce taken at all. thumbup

For me, there was always something going wrong, a light here, wiper blade there. Then the steering packed up and I reached the end of my teather tbh. Still, onwards and upwards.

Is it the TI-VCT or just the usual Duratec? Always thought the former was very good for a 1.6 petrol.

Confession time...I don't know boxedin

What differences are there between the models that I can spot on the car? (i'm guessing the engine itself).

1.6 Duratec is 100PS, 1.6 TI-VCT (Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing) is 115PS. The TI-VCT is quicker and slightly more economical.

I'll have to checck when I pick it up. It didn't say in the description online nor did the salesman mention it.
