Hi
I have been reading the forums for around 6 months now, i have decided to make an accout to contribute to the disscussions!
I am 17 and about to start my lessons next month, i am not to sure of which car to purchase, the best insurers to use!?
For my first car i wouldnt want anything to small and as you have probably guessed a decent size engine would be a bonus!
Thanks for your help
Ben

Anything with an engine bigger than a 1.2 will most likely be well over the £2000 insurance budget! Have a look at a Mk5 Fiesta, and try elephant as an insurer. If you're looking bigger, try a 1.4 Focus, it won't be quick by any means but I got my 1.8 insured for under £1k after 6 months of passing my test. I'm a girl though and live in a safe postcode. I'm 20 now, and speaking from experience, don't blow money on a first car and insurance. Get something cheap and reliable with a small engine, because if you don't crash it and it doesn't break, you still have money to spend when you can afford insurance on something more fun Thats the best advice I can give really.
Old Mini
Old yank tank
Old Rover
All about a billion times cooler than your mate's 1.2 Panda on finance with 3k insurance premiums. You'll emerge from it with a proper knowledge of how stuff works. Buy something with a following and you'll find it easy to source parts and a pair of hands when it breaks.

Some fun stuff that might float your boat - Not saying they are all cool but all should be a decent steer and OK insurance wise (all 1.6L or less).
Citroen Saxo VTR, Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec, Fiat Punto/Seicento Sporting, Nissan Micra 160SR, VW Lupo/Polo GTI, Toyota Yaris T-sport, Suzuki Ignis Sport, Ford Fiesta Zetec-s, Puma, Ka/SportKa.
Another option is to go for something slightly older but with slightly more poke, insure 3rd party and maybe expect a bit of DIY. Nissan Almera GTI, VW Golf MK3 GTI, VW Polo 6N 1.4 16v, Seat Ibiza Cupra/GTI, Alfa 145 Cloverleaf, Toyota Corolla SR VVTi 3dr. Still wish I bought that Golf or Alfa
Plenty more to add in both lists. Parkers is pretty good to get quick info on insurance groups and stats etc though if you are serious about any car make sure you double check their data.
Most have fantastic owners clubs/forums etc - the VW scene in particular.
Insurance depends on lots of factors - area for example plays a big part. Im with Elephant who are constantly the cheapest for me but might be the most expensive for you. Confused.com etc are your friend.
I'd recommend you don't spend too much on your first car - buy something fun though and get something better a year or so later.

I was you I'd go for the cheapest car possible with the cheapest insurance and put the rest of the money in a savings account for your next car.
Failing that, I have been looking at the old 1.6 Mitsu Colt (can get one for around a grand) as a starter track car, should be around the same insurance as a Fiesta Zetec-s?

Insurance companies wouldn't even quote him on most of the above.Citroen Saxo VTR, Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec, Fiat Punto/Seicento Sporting, Nissan Micra 160SR, VW Lupo/Polo GTI, Toyota Yaris T-sport, Suzuki Ignis Sport, Ford Fiesta Zetec-s, Puma, Ka/SportKa.

The MKIII GTI 8v is a Group 14
VTR - 7
Polo GTI - 12
Puma 1.4 16v - 9
Fezza Zetec S - 7
You're 17, get a small engined group 1/2 car, don't waste £4k, spend half that unless Mummy & Daddy are stumping up for it and build up 1-2 years NCB.
If you want to spend all your £4k then a Citroen C2 1.1 is Group 1 and looks ok.
id definetly go for something 1.2 or 1.4.
alot of the suggestions of 1.6s will be an absolute nightmare to get a quote on.
my 52 plate clio 1.2 was £1600 in the first year. a saxo vtr was quoted at over £2.5k
also something less 'boy-racer' will be cheaper too. micras, fabias etc will all be cheaper than clios, corsas, saxos etc.
