Ruined my first Golf GTI trying to put a VR6 in, in the street during winter 3 years ago frown

Ended up scrapping what was a good car, its bugged me till this day because i bought it with 97k Miles, mint condition, £750 Was worth double!

Drove a Porsche 944 for 2 years, but due to having a baby, that had to go in my garage. The 944 needs some TLC, and i planned to get that back on the road. But with the garage becomming damage during the bad winter (left side has dropped 3 inches, cracks and its unsafe!), i cant work on it so that has to go now!

So, baby is 7 months old, sold some crap on ebay and got myself £1k, hope to get £500+ for the 944 giving me a budget of £1.5k-2k

3 Days after my auctions ending, i see a Mk2 5DR in a nice colour, FSH (not VW), 4 owners with the current having it 6 years and it was garaged, previous a VW mechanic and 107k on the clock, it felt right. Even with a 400 mile round trip to collect it

Car came out the garage it sounds ok, deff needs some new plugs and leads, exhaust blowing a bit, although its had a new system with the middle bit not being a VW part. New Rad aswell.

The advert said it had e/w, but the car actualy also had PAS and CL which was nice! No rust around windscreen, one rear door had been treated for rust, and one rear arch, when the trim was loose was bubbling (Owner drove it during the winter). Clutch also need replacing as it was getting heavy (Sign on MK2's that clutch is going)

But it drove and changed gear fine, still getting a new clutch thought.

Breezed home to Cardiff, using 1/4 tank. Gave it a good clean yesterday, it came up tidy, just a few bits need T-Cutting where birds or something have been on the car, didnt get chance to do the whole car yesterday.

Standard car with the exception of being lowered 60mm (Need to raise it a bit due to fking speed bumps all over by me). Not bad for £500 with Tax and MOT aswell

Nice wee bit of retro there.

Any info on this 944? I'm after one for a project.

That's a good buy for £500! Even if it needs a bit of TLC.

That looks like a bargaing for £500!
There's something strangely addictive about MK2 Golfs!

Yea chuffed with it, had a good look underneath. Bit of rust comming on the beam which is easy to sort, although a pain getting the underseal off around :P

Looks like someone has jacked it up wrong and theres a small hole underneath, right of the passenger jack point, prob £50 to get it welded if i get the carpet out etc.

Proves that there are plenty of good mk2s for £500 an you dont need to spent £1K + on a total nail like far too many people do!!

I honestly dont understand how some people manage to fk the jacking points on mk2s so easily. its so annoying as it ruins the underseal and then all hell breaks lose. catch it when you can an yes £50-100 for new jacking point to be welded in then make sure you get decent underseal on it.

rest of the car looks cracking, a nice 90spec royal blue is a classic combiation of style/colour. Ditch the 14 inch steel wheels an get some proper 15inch BBS RA, Sebring, Other original VW alloys an that will improve it no end. Id have a look at the suspension to see if its just springs or uprated shocks as well... lowered springs on standard shocks is a big no no as is raising a car lol.

ps get yourself over to vwgolfmk2.co.uk for info/parts/help + banter.

I like many other 40 somethings really hanker after buying one of these! I had one for about three years in the days of my youth and will hopefully get another when we move later this year. Currently live in London with no garage and only street parking....not sure 80's car locks are much defence against local scroats!

Indeedy on the alloys, got some 15 inch RAs that would suit that nicely if you want em.

Passenger rear arch is rotten, so bought a new arch to be put on, it looks like its the only major body issue after having a good go around.

Owner was driving it during the bad winter snow, up in Nottingham she said they had a month of snow, so snow sitting in a loose bit of trim = bad

All the other trim is on solid, not sure how much hassle it is to remove the other arches? This one was loose thanks to the speed bumps in cardiff, although im glad because there is a tiny bit of surface rust near the sill.

Now i can get the sill sorted before it comes close to being serious!

Other bad news im going to have to raise it! Only 20mm, going to get some 40mF/35mR springs. Speed bump as you come in to my office, think its clipping the sump, found away to get round the bump without hitting it now but the roads are crap, i have to go over 25 speed bumps... just to get past the park :/

i used to live in cardiff until a few years back and by the sounds of it the council must have added to all the speedbumps as there were only a few around Roath which i had problems with and that was with my car lowered 60mm all round. Lowered the back 80mm for a few weeks an gave up after i beached the car in a car wash on city road and caused quite the scene!

a 30mm drop and 15s on with 195/50 tires will make a difference and ought to give you enough ground clearance to get over most obsticles inc kerbs. Luckily a 8v sump doesnt hang that low, i use the front splitter as a benchmark - if you clip the splitter you have 1/2inch before the subframe an sump take a hit.

If i go over the work bump at an angle it doesnt catch, not sure if its the sump but it goes bang!

Just been to Halfords to get supplied to sort the small bits of rust. I checked the website where you can look at all the MOT (Since they put on computer 2005?) and on the last advisory, it came up about the arch.

The latest MOT didnt have the advisory slip frown

But not to worry, i dont think i need to take the others off, had a good look and its fine and solid. Going to take the side skirts off and rear bumper, also front subframe needs some love. Might get a second hand one, paint it etc then swap over.

Great find for £500.

Looks like you might only have to spend another £300 max to get it right.

So a good lowish mileage MKII for less than a grand!

Where did you see the advert. I keep looking just incase I get board approval (the wife) for another one but there seems to have increased in price since I had my last one.

Even tatty ones are advertised for £1500 and good one are north of £2k.

I don't mind spending a bit more on a good one but there seems to be a few dreamers out there.

I was browsing ClubGTI, Edition38 and GolfGTI.co.uk

Also was watching all on Ebay.

I didnt want to spend £500, i had abotu £1300 and another £500+ when i sold the Porsche, i asked for pics and was supprised when it was sent.

I was a bit worried when i seen the rust, but bought a replacement arch for £26 (made sure its for a 5dr aswell) so doesnt look like its going to be too bad!

Steelies look better with the caps off! Might do the same.

Hoping this weekend is dry, going to remove all the body kit and rear bumper and tackle the rust. So far 1 rotten arch, new one should be here tomorrow.

Other arch slight bubble, so nothing major. Tiny hole underneath, beam under neath needs treating. Sill area near rotten arch has got a tiny bit of surface rust so thats got to be sorted too.

Got all the stuff ready, not done rust repair before, but it doesnt look to hard. No need for filler or fibreglass as none is bad enough to warrent it, not even the bad wing that has to be cut out full stop!

Will get some more pics up on the weekend
