I am crap at photography. Can anyone give hints and tips on photographing cars? I am off to the evo triangle tomorrow and would like to try and get some half decent pics.

Hi John,

Best thing to do I think is to make sure you capture the whole of the car and stick with the rule of thirds ( link) when taking a photo.

Nearby, I'd suggest heading up to the Chase to get some photos, there are some great buildings and views you can set as the background. I *think* that photo is taken in Whittington/Fisherwick - if you had towards Elford and then on towards Alrewas there are some great photo opportunities!

With the photo you've posted up, it's good, though I'd like to have a "view" of somesort rather than just the hedge to the left of the car.

Car looks clean!!

If you want any more info just ask smile
HTH, Rob

I agree with what's been said above. Also, make sure you take a picture of the side of the car that she sun's shining on. It'll look rubbish if you get the shady side!

Thanks both. I haven't heard of the rule of thirds before. Will have another go tomorrow.

I like the rule of thumbs link. News to me.

Worth putting your camera on the floor for a worms eye view.

also in above pic, i would have turned the steering wheel to full left lock, to get a view of the alloy rather than the tyre..

I dont think its a bad start.

Worth doing some manipulation in photoshop (expensive) or GIMP (free).

I thought this was PistonHeads, not Countryfile. tongue out

Good advice though, it's nice to see a nice car presented nicely.

As long as the composition is 'ok' you don't really have to worry with photoshop hehe

You can play about with the levels and crop what you want very easily:

Have a look in some photo magazines at the way that they compose their photos - evo is good to look at as of course they use the evo triangle regularly.

Try to make a photo that makes you want to drive the car.

I think that this is a very simple, yet effective photo which could be worth trying to copy the composition of (car at an angle to road with alloy facing camera):

I like the last one, however I would have stood a little more round the rear quarter and got some of what looks like a windy road.

Nice car smile

First and third photos are great, John.

I think the second is good though the flash has limited it somewhat.

Looks icy/snowy there!!

Do you mind if i ask where that road is?

I've done a couple of road tests for PH, and am always looking for a good location, and thats a beauty!

Feel free to PM me if you don't want it public knowledge, or to tell me to bugger off... hehe

Nice 911, maybe not the best day for a drive, but certainly scenic!

I've had a quick play with your pictures if you don't mind smile
