My first car... something a bit different!
Discussion
Well, last Sunday i went out and bought a VW Golf Mk1 Citi - loving every second of driving it now i've got the insurance sorted out (even though i'm spending my monthly wages just to cover it) bit it is so worth it!
Deffo takes a lot of getting used to coming from driving a new skoda fabia - lack of power steering is a killer...who needs a gym ey? Just try and parrallel park my golf!
But yeah, i'm not planning on doing anything to it, i gave the interior a real good clean yesterday and it now looks absaloutely mint! Car needs a good clean, polish and wax which will be done thismorning before college. I'd love to, in the future, get some BBS cross spoke alloys for it and possibly lower it 20mm mainly to stop it rolling about so much but other than that, i love it! Oh, anyone know a good place to find a "volkswagon" and "golf" metal badge for the tailgate? Ideally for free (cheeky) or very little as i litterally have no spare money now!
Let me know what you think of it...more pics to follow i'm sure!

Is that a dent in the middle of the rear bumper?

Thanks everyone i'm really happy with it!
Yep, it's an imported SA citi... 1996 reg so not that old and only 60k miles!
It is a ding in the bumper at the rear and it's also dented the boot a bit as well... wait until spring to sort it out. It's a bit annoying though, it makes me look like i can't drive a car! oh well.
Mmm... i'd love to lower it a little and get those alloys, looks like i'll have to wait a while though - first thing is buy some oil, spark plugs, dizzy cap and a few other bits and give it a real good service and a clean up with my mate.
Couple of questions... It's manual choke so i know i have a lot of getting used to but, yesterday, coming into roundabouts and stopping etc it cut out a couple of times. was this just because i wasn't giving it a rev or two as i came into first?
Also, similiar problem today, going up a hill in traffic and i'd been driving for about 45 mins so choke was all in - engine seemed pretty lumpy and it stalled with the clutch fully in.
Any help would be awesome, thanks guys

The choke problems could well be the time of year, manual chokes are OK but if the weather is damp / cold you will need to have it left fully open for longer than you may think.
Doesn't mean there is an issue with the car or anything, I had a Bedford Rascal as my first car () and this time of year the choke was open a lot.
A manual choke will on some cars close itself automatically when the engine is upto temp, although I am not sure if it does on yours, try driving with it fully open and see if it does say after 20 mins on a motorway.

At first I thought you might still have one of those stty horrible Pierburg 'carburettors' that VW inflicted on their cars in the '80s. However, by the looks of this thread you have Keihins:Also, similiar problem today, going up a hill in traffic and i'd been driving for about 45 mins so choke was all in - engine seemed pretty lumpy and it stalled with the clutch fully in.

Might be worth dropping the guy an email to pick his brains: he's probably already sorted the problem for you, and could talk you through setting the carb up properly.
I've only ever seen Keihins on bikes in the UK, so you might need David Silver or similar if you need any carb bits.
I'd start with a thorough clean of the carb, as well as blowing through smaller drillings with carb cleaner and replacing any rubber seals. You probably have a combination of incorrect settings, built up dirt and air leaks.
Very cool, as said these are everywhere in S.A. But look soo cool (esp. slightly modded, ie in modern VW colours and with sensible alloys).
As for the carb - don't strip it down or adjust it yet. Chances are it's a bit blocked up or has some varnish. Try taking the aircleaner off, and with one hand pull the revs up to about 3-4k using the throttle linkage, and with the other hand block the air intake to the carb off. The engine will splutter and revs plumment, at which point pull your hand off. Do this a couple of times. This has the effect of applying all the engines suck to clear out the jets, and works well. As the carb setting probably hasn't changed you don't risk buggering anything up. Can pull a bit on the hand though - and I've only done it on a 1600 VW beetle engine with a small carb, but should be fine with a small watercooled lump.
