I have used pistonheads for a few years now and thought it was about time i registered !

Being only 18,(and a Student Studying Motorsport Eng) i didnt have much of a choice on owning a fun, quick car, with all the insurance issues. However i managed to pick up this 1998 VTR which had not been molestered ! :O

I have to say, apart from the ruined Chav Halfords image these cars usually get, it drives like a little go kart ! smile

But just to make sure i dont get carried away with the whole stroen "Saxo" scene, ive got this little weapon i built with my dad(PH = Kosmo). High Spec RAW Striker with an R1 Engine in it smile

Took it too the pistonheads meets at Le Mans etc whilst admiring some of your cars smile

Hope to see you guys there next year !

Awesome first cars there!!! Nothing wrong with a Saxo VTR/VTS at all. VTR is the near perfect first car for a petrolhead IMHO. As you say finding a decent one is not as easy as you'd think now!

That Striker looks like a right weapon. Nothing wrong with a Saxo mate (stay away from the blue neons and fibre glass!) Cheap speed and good fun!

haha Thanks guys. The VTR is £900 to insure TPFT on Admiral multicar. But im on my own policy with 0 no claims bonus, so thats pretty good going for a car with over 100bhp/ton, Disc Brakes all round (vented on front), Stiff Anti roll bars, Alloy wheels etc as standard !

The Striker is just the absolutely terrifying.. The R1 engine is so responsive. 0-60 in under 4 seconds.. scary when your 5 inchs from the ground biggrin

I had the same when i was looking online, but when you phone up they seem to help you out much more. If i dont do admiral Multicar, and go on my parents insurance (named driver 10yrs no claims) it comes to £900 also, so ide rather pay £900 on my own and work up no claims bonus.

£3k for VTR is ridiculous though, considering its only got like 15bhp more than the 1.4 equivilent !

I had a VTR at 18. It was a fantastic little car.

You can get this thing sideways quicker than a RWD car ! smile

I cant see me being insured on that any time soon haha. Thinking of getting temporary insurance for like LeMans etc, so we can share the journey there, but im not sure if anyone will insure me ! frown

+1

I get the feeling that the OP will steer well clear of blue neons. Cracking couple of cars, and as others have said - the Saxo is a great little car, especially in unmolested VTR/VTS form.

Heck, anyone with more than half a functioning brain steers clear of blue neons. Saw some on a Golf a week or so back. At night. The lights along the car were put on uneven - looked stupid. They had blue neon lighting in the car. Looked even more stupid.

Tut tut. Im seeing alot of these Audi LED lights (ebay) being put on cars they just dont belong on now. IMO just as bad as Blue Neons !

I have to admit i have done some exterior modification in the form of a Small PH Sticker on my rear window :P

I like the saxos but they are so much to insure, but I have seen the 1.4 furio ones quite cheap and they are almost half of the price of insuring the vtr. My mate has recently bought a 1.1 eastcoast and thats 1900 quid to insure lol

I remember getting quoted £2500 to fully comp insure either a 106 1.1 or Saxo 1.1 back when I was 19 in 2000! Needless to say I didn't bother with them and had to wait my time to get a car of my own. Nice example you have there, I preferred the pre-facelift version. smile

You'll go far my boy! smile

Induction kit is an acceptable mod for these, if your insurance company doesn't hit the roof.

Haha, Ive been driving just over a year now and still dont have any urges to add some fibreglass bumpers :P

I did fit an Induction a while back though, just to improve the throttle response slightly smile

I definatly wouldnt pay more than £1200 to insure one of these though. Ide rather get 1.0 litre run around and spend money on track days with the striker smile
