Impulse buy? Me? Never.
It is a 1973 2002 auto, with 44k genuine miles. Has been off the road for the last 8 years, but it is structurally sound. The thick coatings of underseal have seen to that!
Here's how it started:
The worst area is the paintwork. It has had a respray at some point, but it looks like it was carried out underwater:
Since being tucked up in my garage I've been trying to work out what to do with it. There's a few spots of surface rust in the usual places (door bottoms, around the indicators on the front wings) so it'll want some new wings and possibly door skins:
After that a respray, and a colour change is on the cards. With that in mind, stripping has begun:
It looks to be sound in the 2002 "usual" rust areas:
Rear wheel wells:
Floorpan:
Sills are mostly ok, but could do with a little tidy-up:
Thanks to the help of my beautiful assistant Duncan in the week, the boot and bonnet are also off:
Revealing the metal ball of fury that is the M10:
It is so unusual to have so much space around the lump in the engine bay! Obviously there'll be more space in there once the engine is out - hopefully to follow in the next few weeks.
The hard part about stripping it (compared to doing the M3) is keeping everything in order, so that when it comes to putting it back together I've got a fighting chance of finding stuff.
This is where sandwich bags (lots of them) and plastic crates come in!
Next step? Well, engine out. Then dash out. Then glass out. I'm not quite sure yet what to do to the shell - options are to get it dipped, get it blasted, or option (C) - something else.
If anyone knows of a pair of good doors going begging, I'd be interested...

I had a manual one in bright orange in the early eighties, lovely thing. Trouble was, my wife & I were staying at her parents while our own house was being finished, we had the mother of all rows & I got kicked out. Telephoned a friend & we carted all my gear in his Transit, came back for the car 3 days later to find my brother in law, who was a salesman for VAG, had sold it!!!!!!
Real shame that, I did like it.
