This weekend I picked up yet another Rallye. Flew up to Newcastle and drove it back down. The car in question is infamous on the 106 forums, so you some may know it already. It's usually referred to as RACK, due to it's R489ACK number plate and is the only original 8v out of the three black S2 Rallyes in the UK. Being a German import, it's also LHD biggrin

It's currently standard other than being lowered 20mm on Billies and Eibachs, which I think I'll keep as is. I already have a few marmite plans for it, but on the same principle as my 306, nothing that won't be easily removed. Plans so far are...

306 Rallye front seats, with standard 106 rear seats
Red S1 Rallye carpet and seat belts
GTi CD headunit with 306 steering column control
OMP 300mm Trecento leather steering wheel
Standard steelies on Kumho KU31s
Gloss black 15" Compomotive TH Rallye/CXR
266m 306 S16 brake setup
Raceland/Supersprint 4-2-1
Pugsport 2" exhaust
Standard 8v engine
Colour coded front and rear bump strips (how it should have been!)
Custom crystal headlights
Custom crystal rear lights

It is a really tidy car, and it's clear to see it's had a fair bit of tidying up done lately. There's still a few things I want to sort out now that I've had a good look around it.

Dent in the boot - hoping it will push out from inside when I fit the wiper blank tomorrow.
Dents in the drvers door - Will get a dent remover on the case if I see one at a show, there's about 5 small dents, they just show up in certain light.
Bonnet - rippled along the front edge, will probably get a replacement
Decals - Bonnet and bootlid ones are knackered, side strips are missing a couple of little bits. Will replace with a replica set, hopefully with yellow writing.
Stereo - it has a Sony headunit, but the radio doesn't work, and nor does the source button, meaning that to turn it on, you have to eject the CD. If anyone has a cheap stereo knocking about I'd be interested.
Tyres - It currently has five different brands including the spare, will stick my Superleggeras on for now I think, then see about a full set of Kumhos in time.

That's about it really, aside from that it's a very tidy car! The boot inside had a few scratches, but bodywork wise, it's the tidiest I've ever seen, all the arch panels are perfectly straight and there's very very little rust underneath. The exhaust system is all standard, but it rasps pretty nicely and I even got a few pops out of it eek Gearbox feels nice and tight and the handling on the Billies and Eibachs is perfect biggrin

Pics...

More to come later!

Not yet, but I had to get this before it sold. Still need to do a few more jobs on the 306 before it's ready to go. Got it back on Cyclones now, looks weird!

Anyway, few more pics of the 106.

Mint interior

Represent!

Shiny shiny!

New bonnet needed TBH, and a new decal at the same time

Glossy steels

More new decals needed

Oh hai!

Tidy boot, could do with a lick of paint, but there's not a spot of rust or splitting

Pretty clean underneath too, very little rust under there!

Very cool and arguably the best colour for an s2 rallye. Are you going to drop a 16v lump in it?

like I said it looks really good, not sure I'd have gone from the 306 to it but I guess you just love the 106! I'll look forward to the progress.

It's staying with the standard 8v. It's the only one in the UK in this colour with the original engine, and also I specifically looked for one with the 8v in. I'm not power mad, I don't need the extra 8 valves biggrin

Darren, you probably remember me saying when I first got the 306, I was always going to end up back in a 106 again tongue out

It was always going to happen just like I'm gonna end up back in a GTi-6 once I've been married. Looks like you got a good example mate. Enjoy it!

First major update on the car, new (old) wheels off my 306, finally got round to cleaning them and thought I'd give them a go on the 106. Quite surprised how well they look actually, so might even keep them biggrin

Looks top that James! like the look of it on those wheels, I think steels look too small on the S2...

Love that performance on track sticker too, do they do a german coloured one? biggrin

It's divided opinion, as you can imagine, I think Superleggeras in 16" look smaller than they are though, so it seems in proportion smile

Not sure about German coloured PoT stickers, it's meant to be a club for French car owners, but saying that, there is a few German owners on there tongue out How's your E30 going then? Missing the S1 yet?

ARE YOU ON CRACK! The Steels are perfect, at the risk of sounding like goldilocks they aren't to big, or to small, they are just right.

Grumble grumble to small indeed, grumble grumble.

I knew the wheels would be a bit controversial but I didn't meant to start a huge arguement, lol!

For what it's worth, I'm keeping the 16"s for now, though I'll be getting some 15"s some time as I just prefer the look of alloys.

I'm thinking about getting some semi slicks on the steels for a bit of track use next year smile

It's been a while again, thought I'd stick a few more recent photos and bits of progress from the start of the year onwards on here smile

Started off with a free (biggrin) Raceland 4-2-1 manifold. It was second hand but in good condition and a straight swap for my standard item. Besides, being fitted before meant it went straight on to my car, whereas the Racelands are usually hard to fit.

All fitted with the spaghetti airbox pipe (rare part that usually gets removed and binned)

Couple of months ago I raided my mate's 16v 106 Zest for parts tongue out So now I'm sitting in a mint RHD Rallye passenger seat (in my driver's side of course), I have a split fold Rallye bench (very rare, only one I know of in the UK!), I have headrests in the back (which Rallyes never had), I have a boot floor mat fitted and I've got my spare wheel sitting under the car in the cage as it should be smile

Took the car down to Powerstations rollers at the end of January making 116bhp. Not bad from a bog standard tappy old 8v with just the manifold (and possibly a knackered cat helping!). It's a little on the high side IMO but it gives me a benchmark for any further work I do to the car over the next year.

Went on to Swindon and picked up a black bonnet, panel gaps aren't brilliant but I'm much happier with the bonnet now that there's no rippled dents and no tatty decal.

Also got been working on some custom headlights and went a bit mad on the Ford Graphite Grey biggrin So the indicator holders got done, and then I did the bonnet badge and bonnet struts (which meant I could fit them the 'proper' way round) too. So pleased with the colour, the metal flake in it looks lovely biggrin

Few more pics, if you'll excuse the dirt :P

Then after a brief spell of falling out with the car and wanting to sell it, I started feeling the love again.

I had a bit of a roadtrip in it, had a few days leave to use up before the end of March, so went off round the continent stopping off in Cologne and Dusseldorf, with a quick visit to the 'Ring and Spa (which were both shut!). Whilst I was out there I went to meet a guy from the dutch Rallye forum and picked up a LHD red S1 Rallye carpet, again free of charge biggrin

Even with a few mishaps encountered (car getting stuck on the ferry and not starting being one and radiator losing all it's coolant overnight being another (luckily Radweld in german is Radweld wink)) I really enjoyed it and was glad to get the love back. I'm also running super economically after changing my thermostat (320+ miles to a tank now as opposed to nearly 200 before!) and not only is the stereo working (after over four months of no music), I've now got the choice of radio, CD and MP3 through my phone biggrin

I also came across a great deal on genuine Rallye decals from 106parts.com, took a couple of weeks to arrive but finally turned up at work on the first day of my holiday, typical...

Took it up to a 106 meet this week and it just gets so much attention it's unreal, really puts a smile on my face smile

I had a guy just come and start talking to me outside McDonalds, asking me if I would sell it (I would have said yes three weeks ago!). He knew about how rare it is and said he had an S1 from new to about four years ago and wanted it back. Had a good chat with him.

Got myself a Ph3 306 column stalk from a car my friend was breaking so had a go at fitting it yesterday.

Just had to drill a hole in the steering column cowling and then my mum jigsawed the hole a bit bigger (she's a pro with the jigsaw, lol). Then drilled two smaller holes in the underside and riveted the stalk in place.

Quite pleased with the rivets, they look tidy enough, though I may paint them black sometime.

Not so pleased with the hole for the stalk, I'm going to get a bigger grommit to tidy that up.

Took all this out to make it easier to get everything in the right place.

All fitted and working biggrin

Quite pleased with how easy it all went together and worked!

So next on the list, now that I've done my trip, I'm going to try my slightly dodgy crystal lights and I've got the red carpet to fit once it's been cleaned up a little, so they should both be done in a couple of weeks time.

Didn't see that ^^ till today, oops wink

Cars looking good mate, I really want an S2 at some point in the future, but loving the BMW at the moment, I've got used to the more wafty nature of it as opposed to the "AHHH LOOK AT ME" drive the Rallye provided.

That said, I do miss the noise old 'NTV made, (especially with the raceland!) which is something I'm hoping to sort next student loan wink

if anyones interested I know of a black S1 rallye, its not been used for a few years having been parked up by its owner - who has had the car from new so its a one owner.

Its suffering from being left unsused for so long but looks good enough condition to be worth saving. clock says 100k miles.

if it was back running again with a new mot what would it be worth currently?

anything upto £2250ish for a really good condition one, last time I checked.
