The previous owner had fitted new front wings, a sill, and patched up a few other bits of rust and then gave it a crappy paint job in its original colour. It was sold as "fully restored" LOL but it was clear more work was needed. With that in mind, I promptly did the wrong thing and spent money on engine/box and lots of suspension work. With hindsight I should've got the bodywork done first, which is what I am doing at the moment.

The bodyshop it resides at now is fitting the following:

2x new front wings
Front panel
2x new door skins
2x new rear arches
2x new rear tank/wheel well repair panels
welding to C-pillars and one or two other bits that need doing

After much debate, it is going to be resprayed a second time, same colour, but it should be a proper job this time.

Some more pics:

As it was when I bought it back (bought 2002, sold around 2004/5, bought back 2009) complete with illegal plates.

That's a lot of boywork being done!

Sounds like the previous 'restoration' wasnt of the highest quality.

Cool car, anyway.

I toyed with the idea of another colour but didn't want to go to the expense of an engine-out paintjob, plus Riviera Blue is quite rare and distinctive wink

The previous resto job wasn't the best, not that I could've done much better, and lasted long enough until I could get round to having it done properly.

Thanks for the positive comments.

Awesome car! I know the black plates are 'illegal' but I think they finish the car off IMO.

What time of year did you buy it in 2002? I bought and sold my best Mk2 in 2002 if I'm remembering correctly. Dont I think I remember seeing this one for sale.

Can't really remember but it was probably in the first half of the year. It was advertised in Auto Trader:

It was the North East edition and I was playing the usual game of flicking through, day dreaming about what to buy. The Mk2 was the first 'weekend car' I ever bought (had loads since) and supplemented my company Focus estate and the wife's Fiesta Zetec-S at the time.

Totally agree, look so much better. Plod round here are pretty keen on handing out £60 fines for dodgy plates, so they'll be kept strictly for shows.

Another pic or two:

The bonnet stripes are wrong - the bit parallel to the leading edge should be nearer the front. Hardly matters now though as it'll need a new stripe kit in due course.

That's interesting, I think if I'd have seen that advert I may have atleast had a look at it myse;f. Cant remember if Autotrader did much 'online' stuff back then though so may not have been able to see it.

I went down to Hereford for mine and got my Mum to drive it the 150 miles home!
