My Honda Civic Company Car Opt Out
Discussion
After running an Astra Life for the last 2 years as a company car. I have taken the plunge and opted out of the company car scheme for a whole host of reasons.
The car allowance isn't the biggest in the world so I restricted myself to something I could run in return for the allowance without having to dip into salary.
So on Saturday I pick up a Civic 1.4 Type S, partially prompted by the Civic 2.2 Type S GT that we bought last December.
So here it is, just off the transporter.
It's going to be a whole lot better than the 80 bhp Astra i've had for the last 2 years.

Very nice - I have the 2.2 CDTI ES myself and it is a fantastic car. Comfy as you like, quite insanely practical (so many cubby holes), loads of toys, a fraction of the cost of a 1 Series or Golf and returns 55mpg on the motorway without even trying.
Yes our 2.2 is very good, although it doesn't return 55 mpg, more like 43!!! Basically when I started to look around at cars, I found a lot of them horrendously expensive for what you got. This has ended up costing £12,800 inc mats and to that i have added Honda Bluetooth and 5 Year Service pack.
I looked at the Skoda Octavia 1.4 TSI SE and although I liked the idea of the extra power, in the end I decided against it.

100 bhp, but it's quite well known that Honda's produce a bit more than claimed, rather than less. I picked it up at the weekend and it has really surprised me at how it performs over the 250 miles i've done in it so far.
It's not as good as our 2.2 Diesel Civic Type S GT, but there again that cost significantly more to buy than this one did.
I've done 250 miles in it so far, should get it up to around 600 by the end of the week. It works very well on the motorway and surprisingly doesn't loose momentum up gradients in 6th.
It is a vtec engine so it does like to be rev and I need to adapt to that after driving a turbo car for the last 2 years every day. The reviews say it is very good over 5,000 rpm, but I haven't tried that yet as it is still too new.
The spec is pretty good, although it looses the Glass Roof, Auto Wipers/Lights, Cruise, Electric Folding Mirrors, Fog Lights and Dual Zone Climate that the Diesel has.

Looks great, seen quite a few of those about recently on 59 plates. Must be a nice upgrade from the Astra!
Yes not in the same league, yet nearly £2,000 cheaper pre discount than a boggo Astra Life Diesel.Yes, I did fancy a Focus Zetec S.
I was offered a 5 door in Panther Black with a 1.6 engine for £13,500. However it had to be that one particular car and it had to be registered in August, which didn't suit my timescale.
I picked up this Type S for £12,700 with 12 months tax, full tank of fuel and proper Civic Mats. The list price was £14,700 (Astra Life was £16,500).
I have paid £540 for the 5 year service pack and £300 for their bluetooth kit as extras.

Jesus, £12,700!! A sodding Vauxhall Aglia Design 1.2 costs the same! FOR A CITY CAR! When we were looking at family hatches a few months back we thought the Honda was expensive... Evidently not, cracking buyI was offered a 5 door in Panther Black with a 1.6 engine for £13,500. We were looking at an 07 EX 1.8i with everytihng and 9k on the clock - £13k
18months prior it would have cost £19,000
We dipped the budget to buy 2 cars though and in the end settled for what seems to be a corker of a used deal, ex-dealership finance managers 08 Peugeot 308 SE, brand new = £19,000
ours at 16months, 14,200mi £9,000
It's still very well equipped, but for the same price as the Civic new it misses out on the Leather seats, HIDs, Satellite Navigation and Bluetooth
In terms of spec and I think it stacks up pretty well, when you compare to other entry level 3 door models in it's class. Admitedly though Honda do only do 2 grades in the 3 door and that is Type S or Type R.

My 5dr Megane Dynamique 1.4 hasn't quite got all of those and cost £15,000+ in 2003, Honda really are rather good value for money... 1.4 100hp and a 6spd box? I've got a 100hp 1.4 and I wish I had a 6spd box...16" Alloys

Well you need to be quick as the extra support from Honda doesn't have long to run from memory.
http://www.honda.co.uk/cars/civic3door/
The deal is good because Honda are giving £1,200 extra contribution on the 1.4 only and it has to be red, silver or black and the 2 other metallic colours are on 5 month lead time.
I've managed to get 300 miles on it and it's pretty damn good. It will need filling with fuel tomorrow and is currently doing just shy of 44 mpg, which has included some high speed motorway work.
I have found I need to work the gearbox on some inclines but that could be me. It's also pretty decent at overtaking artics, something that couldn't be said about the old car.

Haven't driven one of the Civics with the new 1.4 before, but although it has good bhp the slight lack of torque would mean you need to work the gearbox. Its the same in the Merc A150 with a similar sized engine and overal weight.Gassing Station | Readers' Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
