Well after many years of posting bargain barges in various threads i took the plunge last weekend & bought one! A 1997R 540i, its done 122000 miles & has full BMW service history up to July 2008, the last owner had spent an absolute fortune on it.

This is what it looked like when i bought it. It was looking rather sorry for itself & needed the alloy wheels refurbing & a damm good clean..

I've spent the last 2 weekends cleaning it & heres the result..

Oh and i only paid £1500 for it smile

Very nice, bet it drinks fuel like anything though. Should be pretty fast. How does it feel mechanically?

It does like a drink! Drives spot on, the last owner has spent a small fortune over the last couple of years keeping it mechanically sound.. thumbup

Whenever I see that written in an advert I dunno what to think

"lots of receipts, thousands spent"

Just makes me think, ok. Yes he's done the cam belt etc etc so I won't have to do it, but also makes me think, hmm does that mean I'm going to have to spend 1000s to maintain it.

It means someone else has spent the ££££££££££s so you dont have to

I know what you mean. I went through all the invoices before i decided to buy it. Discs, pads, Dunlop tyres, front & rear suspension arms / bushes, aircon re-gas, brake fluid changes every other year, coolant changed, a service carried out every year by either BMW Croydon or BMW North Oxford all as per BMW's service schedule. The last service was carried out by an independent,an oil leak was rectified, a lumpy idle problem was sorted & some other bits that i can't remember, the total bill was £1,900!!

Looking good Mikey, I can't quite make out the average MPG readout on the dash, what is it reading at the moment?

thumbup Nice car!

Looks great inside and out.

If you can drag that 7.1mpg down a bit, we'll know you've been driving it properly

What an absolute bargain! I thought it would have been at least twice the price. Cracking buy, I would love a 540i like that as a daily smoker.
