My 205 Returns to the road
Discussion
I am sure I started a project thread for this yonks ago but I cannot for the life of me find it. And I always forget to take pictures while I go along, so they never work out anyway. So here is a quick summary. It all started in 2007 as a pretty rough but straight 1600-
Following it home on the M4 it used 35 quid of petrol in 150 miles and my friend driving kept commenting on how it was trying to kill him. I could tell this was the start of something special.
After a few hundred quid spent it was roadworthy, and over the summer I changed a few bits all over the place to make it look like this-
In my final year of uni, it survived a few track days and the best Welsh roads could throw it.
Somewhere along the line it picked up the name of 'Flo', I think it was because it sounded a bit French, and I hadn't named a car before. Bit odd. My housemate was becoming more of a Pug fan, and bought one of these. Soon the landing and most flat surfaces seemed to be accumulating bits of Pug.
Then I finished Uni, and whilst I was waiting to start work I took it off the road and started work. This was the first port of call-
Then this happened one hungover Sunday with only the use of a couple of planks and a jack.
It goes a bit hazey here, but then this happened-
A few months went by, I got it back into a decent enough state to move house, and then left it for a while due to other commitments. 2 weeks ago I started work again every evening and weekend, and yesterday it passed it's MOT first time-
There are still jobs to be done but it was healthy enough to go for a good run this evening-
Here's some of the spec to fill in my god awful explanation-
60k mile Xsara VTS/306GTI-6 engine, all the usual maintenance bits done
Mocal 13 row oil cooler
Re-angled exhaust manifold method
Gaz Coilovers, solidly mounted rear beam with Group N rubber mounts/Polybushes on the rest of the suspension and engine.
1.9 BE3 box with Quiafe ATB LSD
OMP 10 point bolt in cage and industrial revolution spec seat mount rails
Goodridge Hoses and Braided Fuel lines running in-car.
306 S16 266mm Brakes, currently settled for st stuff pads until I can find something better, race brake fluid.
Rear mounted battery.
There's plenty of other stuff, along with a long list of standard parts changed whilst the car was in bits, but that's all I can remember at this point.
First impressions are every bit as good as I had hoped. The handling may have lost some of its edge with the heavier engine, but with the LSD I cannot notice, it's still as sharp as it was. A great investment. It rides pretty firm as its target was always track work, but it's still good fun on the roads. I am glad I went with a GTI-6, the power is smooth and the noise is really quite something. So it has been a year off the road nearly to the day, and a load of work, but even after two days on the road, I can tell it was all worth it. Very pleased. Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the kind comments!

Lovely looking toy there!
How close are the harness mounts to thr front seats mate? The angle of the shoulder straps looks very steep
They are sagging in the pictures, but they are comfortably over the recommended 45 degrees. I do still quite fancy a harness bar but the cage is positioned a bit too close so it would have to be in between the rear arches I guess. How close are the harness mounts to thr front seats mate? Well I thought I would resurrect this again with some new pics, I haven't had the car on the road for 3 months due to being a poor student again, so naturally I had to have some fun in the christmas break, with a friend in his 172 Cup. Bit more edgey then I had remembered and so so different to my E30, and the handling, noise and power are just as enthralling as ever. A few pics, some of which have been fiddled with Picasa out of boredom-

Looks really good. Im thinking about doing the gti6 engine conversion myself. Where did you get the decal for the grill from if you dont mind me asking?
Decals are available on ebay for a few quid, there's a few different PTS ones available. Mine is actually made of different colours of insulation tape and was started as a joke between me and a friend, but just stayed! One pack from Wilko has 3 colours and costs about 99p, and the light blue is about 50p from maplins JayPee said:

(Thick Red, Thick Dark Blue, Narrow Yellow, Very Thick Light Blue) The colour shades aren't miles off And besides now I have lots of insulation tape lying around The colours did change for the 905's in the early 90's anyway, but yeah all in all, get the stickers, and people won't comment on your insulation tape when they see the car close up
As for the conversion, it's the first I have done on my own, and I would hardly say it is particularly tricky. Massive praise is due to the guys on the 205gtidrivers forum, hugely informative, and much more down to earth then many other single make forums I have encountered, that certainly helped to get hold of the right parts to start with! The engine mounts are the same, and it just fits in the bay, with access available to cambelts etc. for later on. Something needs to be done with the brake MC position and the exhaust manifold, in my case the manifold was re-angled very slightly, the MC moved up slightly with slight reshaping to cam cover. Besides that, gearbox mounts fine with an MI16 clutch, and the wiring is pretty simple too! If anything I would say it is a pretty good one for somebody to start off with due to its relative simplicity. HTH
