a new boy wanting tips on tuning my 1.6zetec

hey guys i am new to all this forum. what it is i want to get my 1.6zetec and possibley make it into a road/track project. i am a little mechanicaly minded and want to get my hands dirty knowing what to do when the lil zetec dropps its gutts all over the road.
any body know where do i start when it comes to tuning???

In all honesty I wouldn't bother. What little gains you'll get will cost a lot more than they're worth.

The same as every other engine.. Exhaust, intake, cams etc. But none of them get you very far with the 1.6 Zetec unless your spending serious money with the likes of ShawSpeed etc.

Im guessing it's a Fiesta you've got? If so, it's a lot easier and cheaper to just stick a 1.7 Puma engine in there.. Then start stripping weight

its a mk1 focus. i am just looking to start my 1st project and thought my lil zetec would be perfect.

Save up and get a better car, as it would be cheaper and you'll get more worthwhile gains in the long run.

If you really want to modify it, then your best (and most likely cheapest option) would be to do a swap. 2.0 mondeo engine would fit, so you could do one of them or a 1.7 puma engine with pumaspeed conversion would be poky (pumaspeed conversions are expensive though) so it's all up to you. I really would'nt modify a 1.6 zetec though. Unless you chuck thousands of pounds into it, your not going to get much in the way of gains.

EDIT: What car is it, im guessing fiesta zetec-S? You could put a fiesta/escort RST lump in. Providing your have everything you need, you could have the swap done in a weekend. There around 140hp stock, so plenty of poke and there VERY tuneable.

EDIT2: I really should read the thread better. Its a focus. An RST engine would still fit in there though, as would a 2.0. As said before though, it might be best for you to just sell it and get a 2.0, or just save up for a better car.

dont bother with the 1.6. Save up for a 2.0 as a better starting point. Or find a cheap 2.0 lump, and give it a rebuild in your spare time while you are waiting to drop it in.

I think people are meaning not to bother with that engine. He could end up spending £1000s just getting it to the standard power of the 2.0. the 2.0 is a better starting point with lots of mods available.

Probably be better sorting out suspension and brakes and stripping a load of weight before trying to squeeze more power out of the 1.6.

Why not go one better and save up for a ST170 or an RS (maybe a little too much saving perhaps) it'll take a little while but it'll be worth it in the end, I've just done near enough that although on a different level, I sold the Porsche 944 S2 ealier this year and on Friday all being well I pick up a 2000 TVR Tuscan for my 21st birthday.

welll lads thanks for alll your help. i am now goin to save all my wages and live like a tramp for a few months and find myself a 2.0L or a look at a sporty little number like a st170 or something.

That sounds like a better idea, an ST170 would be a much better option as it would also have other improvements bar a bigger engine.

You won't regret it if you go for something like a ST170 it'll be a vast improvement over what you have already and not just in straight line performance either. I say good luck to you chap.
