Chav Hatch - Clio 182!
Discussion
Well I've finally managed to stop driving it long enough to take a few (very quick) photos so I thought I'd get them posted!
I've been considering a 182 for ages and after carefully saving money each month and seeing no return, I decided I was in a position where I could afford to buy and run one so I took the plunge. Within a few days of finally making my decision, my ideal spec came onto the market at a very good price so Polarbert and I were in Dudley on a Sunday afternoon giving the car a detailed checkover. Just 3 days later I'd handed over a wedge of cash and had myself £5k worth of 59k mile, 54 plate, 2 lady owner Clio Sport!
There was only ever one colour for me, Gordini Racing Blue harking back to the Renault racers of years gone by! So many people tell me that the stripes make me look like a chav and of course not everyone will like it, but I think it looks stunning!
The car has plenty of toys, climate control, cruise control, automatic xenon headlights, sports seats and a rather tuneful induction kit. The world's most pointless strut brace has however been removed so if anyone wants a cheap one, drop me an email!
I've now done nearly 400 miles and I'm still grinning like a boy in short trousers on a sledge everytime I get behind the wheel. The car is everything I expected, but a late evening cross-country drive form Chester to Nottingham made me warm to it even more! The effortless pace, overtaking ability and sheer hold-on-tight nature on the backroads puts a smile on your face. In the next breath however, back on the M1, I simply popped the cruise control on, turned up the stereo and relaxed into the comfy seats!
I know several people have said that they are considering getting a 172/182/Cup/Trophy so if anyone is interested, I'll keep updating this thread with a quick running report every month or so to get an idea of what it is really like to live with.
So far the figures say:
Mileage: 396
MPG: 31.5
Average Speed: 37.2mph! (I don't use it round town often )
It does of course have it's issues, but nothing I didn't expect. The French rattles are present, the MPG is pretty dire for a hatchback and it is pretty stiff going slowly round town, but all-in-all for anyone considering a plunge into Clio ownership - Just Do It!

The only thing I would change is the alloys. They looks sooo nice on Anthracite Turinis!
There are a few scratches on the wheels (2 lady owners ) so I have considered getting them done even darker, but the new wheels idea could be a go-er too. Currently lacking funds having purchased the car to look at too many major changes.I did get 55MPG showing on the computer - straight out of a petrol station and into 5th gear at 40mph through speed camera alley! To counter that I have had 16MPG out of it for a short period too
Next stop is to book some ferries for a Euro trip with a couple of other PHers to the Alps and Germany
Nice car, i do sometimes miss my 182 - have upgraded to the 197 and the mpg is a lot worse.
I saw 37mpg in the 182 on a full day of motorway miles but never really saw over 35.
You will love it, make sure you get registered over on Renaultsport for lots of people with advice and help!
Happy motoring,
Woza.

I'm already registered on ClioSport, but will check out RenaultSport too.
I'd imagine you can get 40MPG, but I just don't use it for 'boring' driving very often due to commuting by bike and walking most places locally!
As for the Turinis, the jury is out from me but certainly something to consider

I'm doing motorway milage atm and currently getting 37 mpg +
Around town i'll be getting 30 - 33 but i dont think thats all that bad.
I've seen 24 mpg on B roads but any less imo (on a road not track) and you've etiher got to be doing alot stop starting or breaking the law by some length.
Great little car although mine is showing its age and milage.
Was considering moving to many things including a 197, and tbh they are either impratical (elise/exige) & no faster or like the 197 / S2000 cost alot more to run.

Nice car, shame about the thread title because I do not personally consider the clio sports to be chavvy, unless you were being amusingly ironic.
Hope you enjoy the motor as much as I have with my 172 Cup. Such a well sorted car and easily able to keep up with much more exotic machines on the point to points. Let us know what you think of the 2nd gear ratio. I always felt that it was a weak spot in the clio's armour because it is a little short and can be a nuisance mid corner. I had a K-Tec remap fitted to mine which gives an extra 1000rpm (taking the car from 6800 to 7800rpm). This has sorted 2nd, but has also provides you with excellent flexibility for 3rd gear (on the twisty stuff I find that I rarely need to use 4th, + keeping the engine fizzing around the magic 5000rpm mark as much as possible).
Have to admit that the Gordini Blue is the smartest colour for the Clio, though it would be interesting to see what the old gen would look like in liquid gold.

I like it a lot, and the stripes do look good.
I'd love a 172/182 cup as an everyday car. There is a black 182 cup near where I live with anthracite coloured wheels that looks stunning.
Only things are the fuel economy and I think it would be a shame to ruin one by putting a big motorway mileage on it, I'm probably better off sticking to the dmy diesel astra for an everyday car, as dull as it is.
