Gentlemen,

Having worked my way through a fair selection of dull cars (Corsa/Rovers/Volvos) I have finally bought myself something a little bit "cool" as a 21st Birthday present to myself.

I first decided I wanted one when I was 17 and had bought a Mk2 Golf, which was great, but unfortunately couldn't get insured on a Scirocco for a fair amount at the time. After a while I sort of forgot about my decision to some day have one until I was browsing the Car & Classic classifieds and spotted this one for sale for £400.

Went to see it the same day, got the seller down to £390. It's not perfect but I'm happy with spending a bit of money to get it up to scratch as I consider myself to have paid a good price for it.

Things I'm aware of that need doing at the moment:
  • Cambelt
  • Clutch
  • Rocker cover gasket
  • Sump gasket
  • Brakes could probably do with new pads and the caliper seems to be catching so I'll investigate that
Anyway, onto pics:

Comments and criticism all welcomed with open arms.

Couple of other Scirocco specific thing to look out for :

Check the condition of the bulkhead where the clutch cable runs through it, the metal is prone to distorting and putting the clutch out of adjustment, and possibly wearing the clutch out prematurely.

Check the fuel filler fipe into the fuel tank, this corrodes which drops rust into the petrol = random breakdowns (ask me how I know)

Check the wheelarches and sills under the bodykit. Big rust trap.

Cheers HAB. I have given the wheel arches and sills a good checking over as that was what ultimately killed off my old Mk2 Golf frown

Would the fuel filler pipe issue explain why once the petrol gets into the red it starts to feel like it's misfiring a wee bit? I figured it may have something to do with a build up of gunk in the bottom of the tank, but wasn't sure exactly why it'd be there. Also how do you know?

I'll have a look at the bulkhead around the clutch cable, but it has all the receipts from new and still appears to be on its original clutch at 166k so I don't think that's too much of an issue.

Thanks for the hints and tips matey.

Corsa looks good, strong healthy steering racks on those.

Great bargain there. Was looking for one last year and failed, doesn't look like there's alot more of these around anymore
