Hi all thought I would stick a thread on here of my car just to gauge some opinions of it outside the little VW world it’s been exposed to so far!

Basically this is my current car; I have owned it for just over a year now. My original intention when I bought the car was to simply run it, enjoy it and occasionally show it at one or two shows. I know show cars aren't everyone’s cup of tea, strangely mine included, having grown up karting, I have always wanted something I could use in anger on a track whilst still potter around in. However...being slightly vain/ easily pushed by all things shiny, I ended up buying this instead....

Which was quickly made to look like this...

I will save the long and slightly laborious story of how its transformed over the year to its current state, but it basically involves a warning from the police (that tied in nicely with the 17 page petty argument that ran on here over stretched tyres and tyres "poking" from the wheel arches), negligent damage from a well known VW specialist, more damage from a well known recovery firm, more damage, again, from Coventry's finest quality roads and finally yet more damage from the lovely little scrotes that feel the need to vandalise other people’s property.

Anyways, I'm getting side tracked. The current state of the car is back to my original intentions, I want to use the car as a track day car whilst also being comfortable enough to use as a daily car, being a student I can't afford to run two cars so this is the best compromise for me, I feel....

Some pictures of how it is now....

And the Interior...

Like I mentioned previously, the reason I've created this is to gauge people’s opinions outside the other forums I'm on so I'm not expecting everyone to like it or understand why I've sunk so much money into what is, in essence, an 11 year old golf, however it’s my vice and I love it.

So any criticisms or praise is more than welcome!

Thanks for looking,

John.

Stunning! Always wanted (and still do) a Mulberry VR Golf or Rado. As much as I love a car that can be taken out and thrashed I still like the stretched look. Love the Recaro's- really finish it off.

Love it. The leather bra isn't to my taste but the rest is spot on I'd say.

Love it... i sadly have a soft spot for these model golfs... often reveered as the worst of them all. But i like them and love the Mulbery ones.

Get rid of the leather bra though.... hideous... yes its a 'leather bra' just say it out loud to your self. 'Ive bought a leather bra....'

stops the front of the bonnet getting chipped.

The bumper, lights and grill are apparently immune from stone chips in the VW world...

I think they look ridiculous, but the rest of the car looks great! Better without those silly wheels too IMHO.

Hey bud! Always nice to see a familiar name over here as well! Thanks for the comment, I'm being slightly big headed about this but I love the new look as well, it never fails to amaze me how much a car changes with just a simple wheel change!

The CH's are 17 x 8.5 J et35, with 215/40 R17 tyres. Fronts sit so well within the arch, just not happy with the rears at the minute!

Thanks to all the others for the comments as well!

With regard to the bra, it’s not a permanent feature! It was only on there as my friend taking the photographs seemed to think it worked better with it! Personally I'm not a fan of them, but they do their job! As for the bumper & grille being immune from stone chips, I bloody wish! I have a full "gimp mask" one for when I'm being extra anal over the paint work, which covers everything - well, except the lights. Plus, at the minute I'm not particularly bothered about the paint on the grille or bumper as my friend reversed into the car the other day scratching the leading edge of the bumper and the grille has picked up a nasty stone chip as well.

But other wise, it’s usually left in the cupboard, never really understood those that run them permanently. Not the best thing for the paint work.

As I mentioned above, I agree about the alloys, these are the sixth set that have been on there since I've owned it, and by far are my favourite!

Do have plenty more planned to come, but its nice to see its been well recieved so far anyway!

Great looking VR, can't decide which look I prefer all 3 are great the CH's are stunning I have to say, although their is always something about golfs dropped on standard rims. My only criticism is the rear light units, I think VW got the light units so spot on with the smoked ones I've yet to see an after market improvement. Great car mulberry is a stunning colour cloud9thumbup

I'm soooo glad you didn't get wider rears! i did that without really thinking about it with my old corrado... it's pretty much the norm in the VW scene but doesn't really make sense on a fwd car, now one of my pet hates!

Its funny you should mention that, I dug out the original units yesterday to fit, only for it to start raining! The ones on now, came on the car, but I've never been 100% on them. And I fully agree about the colour, its one of my all time favourite colours, think theres only two maybe three other colours VW do that come close to it. Original rear lights will be fitted today to see how I feel they look!

Yeah totally, I'm all for a car sitting right on its wheels, but I'm not a fan either of cars running 1.25" lips on the front and 3" lips on the rear, just knocks the car out of proportion for me....coming from me who ran silly amounts of dish on my mk1! biggrin

I had a similar arguement with Manchester's finest once in a Mini Cooper (proper one). It had the sportspack arches (from Rover) on it and 13" alloys (again from Rover). True enough they did stick out a tiny but but my arguement was thats how Rover intended it so whats your fecking problem! They backed down in the end which was suprising.

Back O/T though, lovely looking Golf, I think it looks much better with the new wheels on anyway and that colour looks .

Ditto the above, get rid of the gimp gear, its a car, it's going to get stone chipped etc!

Thanks for the comments! Nice (well not really) to see its not just the VW community that get flak then, the excuse the police gave me was so stupid I had to bite my lip to stop me laughing!

Anyways...car is now for sale. I've now got a hankering for an Impreza Coupe...

Its a shame you got rid of the wheels with stretched tires as the wheels themselves looked very good and in keeping with the euro look of the car (i assume that was the intention)
The car itself is very nice, lovely and clean looking. My only criticism are the crytal rear lights. Never ever been fond of any aftermarket rear lights on the mk3's.

You should tell the story of the cars life, for some (like myself) it would make an interesting read and for those who cant be bothered reading they can just glance at the pictures and read snippets.

Anyways, Very nice golf.

i've got a Vr also in Dragon green, out of all the wheels, if i had to buy a set. Yours would be the ones. they suit it so well! nice car buddy!

Im thinking of getting rid of mine soon though, it tends to gobble fuel and the O/H cant stand the stiff suspension on mine!

rofl Ahh, thanks very much for confusing me further! Only joking! Is there any reason as to why you'd rather have the VR? I have seriously thought about FI for this, and it still is a possibility for it, only Strictly Dubs want 4.5k for a drive in-drive out turbo delivering a safe 360 whp...evilevil

Thanks very much! I think out of the six sets of wheels I've had for it I do like these the best, had compliments of people I was never expecting them off as well...my sister being one who usually just laughs at the car...bless her!

It was more through need than want getting rid of the Schmidts. Shame really as it looked evil from all angles on those. Think 16's are the optimum size for a mk3 anyway. The 17's I'm running are verging on the large side of things....In a way though, I am kind of glad they've gone, nearly every other VW runs Schmidts within the scene so its nice to run something different, plus with the likes of Fast car and Max power pushing "euro/ cleaned/ dub" or whatever they're passing it off as, as the current trend, I am trying to get away from that whole look as well. Not being a snob, just don't like the whole thinking behind the readers of most those mags....

Rear Lights have gone now anyways, like I mentioned up there ^^ somewhere, I've never been keen on them and I've re-fitted the originals, car looks so much tidyer and original now!

Before;

After;

With regard to the cars life story, its a 22 page epic on E38, but I'm sure I've condensed it down on another forum, will dig it out and paste it here!

Don't know if your on there or not, but get yourself on edition38.com lots, very good for all things VW.

And cheers for the comments as well!

this was mine 98 R, 40k, s'charged, koni's, schrick cams, 17" split rims, big ice install (kids loved that), scooby was on top of my wish list for ages, when insurance came down to a reasonable amount bought a '98 subaru turbo. Man if i thought my vr6 was high maintenance boy was i in for a shock. Fair play it was seriously rapid but it was horrid inside, constant oil leaks, bits needed replacing reguarly and ended up hating it. After it had gone thought maybe just bad luck so a couple of cars later bought another one, 2000 turbo, and yep that was ste too!! The golf was a far nicer place to be, easily modded, cheaper to run and bit of a q car (nobody seems to like the mk3's) would have another tomorrow
