Well after lots of deliberating, I decided I wanted to buy a Land Rover 90, over a MINI Cooper, Mazda MX5, or Mercedes E220 E124 Coupe - I then set my sights to sell the Fiesta and purchase in December...

Well like all my plans, that lasted all of 5 minutes redface So earlier this week I bought a Land Rover Ninety eekbiggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

I have also decided to run it alongside the Fiesta eek, so it could be very interesting in months to come to run both of them on a student pub wage! eekthumbup But do I care? Not one tiny little bit - I have had some nasty experiences lately, and I have decided to take every opportunity as it comes, so just enjoy it.

It's not showroom fresh, but I have seen newer at far worse!! It was reg'd on 01/09/86, so its an early 'D' Plate - But I have since looked at the VIN plate which tells me the car is an '84 build confused Despite the different door handles confused It also started life as a hard top rather than a station wagon, with the conversion being carried out quite well. Anywho, its done 82.7k miles, and its all running very sweetly - Also got a quite rare 2.5 Petrol engine which I think suits the car very nicely!! It was an ex coastguard car, and looking through the service history it seems to have been well looked after, so I hope it lives for a good while longer yet!!

Its got quite a few sensible mods already, such as front and rear diff guards, steering guard, Rostyle Wheels, Maestro front seats (in Brown!! But in all seriousness, they are very comfy!), as well as full chequer plating.

In the following weeks, I will be waxoiling the chassis + diffs, and get some Insa Sahara Tyres, and whatever else may take my fancy!

I hope you like it biggrinbiggrin

90's are great thumbup.
Rough and tough when you need it, but short enough for round town, yours looks like solid little tug.
I'm particularly envious of the Maestro brown draylon seats - the ones in ours are predominately gaffer tape hehe.
Look after him and he'll serve you well.

Nice. A proper off-roader. What is the white roof about? Is it removable? Or just so it can be spotted from the sky?

Ah, yes, that would make sense.

The white roof was standard colour for any 80,s 90 or 110. A desert/tropical spec "Safari" roof was available on the previous S111.Which consisted of any additional roof layer to the outer part of the roof, with a 1/2 inch gap and two wind driven fans in the inner roof panneling

I would love a V8, I was on the lookout for one, but its too much to convert at the moment, especially considering the value of the vehicle!!

Thanks for all your comments, I'm surprised it has been welcomed with open arms on PH! thumbup

I must get those tyres soon though, just been round the field crossing some ruts, and got it stuck twice, all because the tyres didn't give me enough bite. Good excersise for mum trying to push me out though hehe

Is it me, or have you been digging holes in your garden with a fork so you can drive through them in your new landy?!

Are those Volvo 340 seats by any chance? They look a lot more comfortable than the standard ones.

Sweet car, our old 3 series had a white roof and was an ex RNLI car, towing boats out of the sea at whitby. It had a major overhaul and became my dads car in the early 90s and had the same range rover wheels as yours has. Loved that car when I was a lad, now I want one!

Nothing strange about it - they ARE cool! Because they're fit for purpose and iconic in the same way as the 911 or Mini.

To the OP - be careful with Insa's, they're really pi$$ on the road.

I'd suggest Kumho KL71's - great on and offroad (they're a directional MT) and amazing value.

shhuuussshhh don't tell dad hehe They are getting slowly deeper too thumbupbiggrin

They are Maestro Seats, and I have only sat in them for maximum an hour so far, but they are far comfier than the standard fare!! And don't scorch you in heat or freeze you in cold like vinyl!

It's odd because the people who have seen the Ninety seem to give an admiring glance, or will come over and comment on how 'cool' it is. I must admit I was quite struck by this, and I don't think you'd get that on a period RRC or later Discovery from the general public (you will get nuts like me though hehe)

What engine did yours have? The fuel guage in mine isn't working, but at a guess I'd say it's doing well to top about 10-11mpg at the moment. Good job I've been given more shifts recently hehe

wow sounds like quite a similar history to mine then!! I think mine had Rostyle wheels (this fitment) from new, though the ones you see on the car are replacements as the orignals got stolen!! frown The only original remaining is the spare one you see on the back which is white. I do love the Rostyle wheels, and if it didn't have them when I bought it, I would have gone the extra mile and sourced some (fairly rare).

I found out about the coastguard history through Land Rover's re-united, and I would have like to contact an earlier owner to see if they know more, I am very interested in things like that!!

Well now is the time to buy one winkbiggrinbiggrin

I have seen them on a variety of Ninety's and One Ten's (both Petrol + Diesel), but the earliest fitment I have seen was on the original Velar Range Rover. I am not sure however what they were like when they were new, this car is about 4 1/2 years older than me tongue out

In the end I bought some Maxxis Buckshot Mudders, because I managed to get an incredibly good deal from my local LR specialist. I did look at the Kuhmo tyres as they do seem like the full ticket, but for me they were too expensive frownfrown Cheapest KL71's I could find in 235/85/16s were £82 before VAT, and I have just bought these Maxxis for £51 each + VAT. I am awaiting their fitment, but I will be keeping the road tyres then finding some White Wella wheels or similar then fit the road tyres to those for everything in between off roading smile

Just thought I'd show those who may be interested in a pic with my new tyres fitted!!

I was hoping to go to my local P&P tomorrow (Devils Pit) but the weather has been so dry and warm it seems pointless!! So I'm off to go and try out some fairly local greenlanes! smile
