Hello to all on pistonheads i heard about this website from my nextdoor neighbour, he said to check it out. So this is what i've done. first things first thought i'd put a few pictures of my motor on.
Its a 1996 vdub golf gti. 2.0l 8v engine. not much done to it k&n filter, guna look this month see how much more power i can get out of it. Any ideas feel free to post.
The outside of the car i've debadged the grill, lowered on coilovers 60/50mm, ronal 15" alloys.
I've owned this car for abot a year now, just slow progress, with credit crunch and all that.

cheers

Wont get much more power out of the 8v. I would look into an engine swap.

why not go for a 1.8T plentiful, similar power output, lighter less nose heavy and scope for serious power?

Looks really quite smart, I would have thought the 1.8T engine in it would be a nice conversion, plenty of scope for extra power too smile

Although it maybe cheaper just to source another car

for the VR6 engine it is as you have been told effectivly a straight swap, as the VR6 and GTI are pretty much the same car with a differnt engine.

peronsally if i was to do an engine swap (i own a MK3 1.6 GL) i would put the 1.8t from the audi S3 into it. 225bhp!!! and that is also pretty much a straight swap.

also get some Ronal LS's or Lenso BSX's for it. Just as nice as BBS LM's but without the price tag. Altho that said there are some fairly decent sets of BBS wheels on the bay that are 5 stud fitment.

Also if your going with the VR6 engine, be sure to go with the one in the corrado. As the 0.1l extra displacement gives you an extra 20BHP (golf 2.8 is 170bhp and corrado 2.9 is 190bhp if i recall correctly)

Its just a shame you went with a MK3 GTi as they are supposedly the worst golf GTi ever made.

Not true. OK the Mk3 doesn't set the world alight but the Mk4 2.0 8v is worse imo.

if you do get a golf VR6 as it will be loads cheaper, make sure you get the later OBD2 version. but tbh, sell your car and buy a VR... i bought mine for £1000, you could probably sell yours for that!! you would save time, money and hassle doing that!

VR6 will go in without much hassle. But look into the 1.8turbo engine, as its so much more tunable.

as standard the 1.8t from the s3 is ~225bhp, bigger turbo, front mounted intercooler, run a little more boost and your laughing, there are some rediculous ones out there based on the s3's engine, also get some bigger brakes a nice set of 17's to go over them a decent set of coil overs and some stiffer ARB's and you will have a mean track car aswell.

Someone suggested selling up and getting the VR6, if your going to do that go for the corrado VR6, granted its not as practical but its a better car in the eyes of many.

dont mean to sound like im ripping your car, if i could insure one i'd have a GTi as a stop-gap between my 1.6 and the corrado VR6, but 0ncb doesnt permit it.
