New daily snotter: Mk2 XR2
Discussion
Never done one of these threads beofre so don't know if anyone is interested but thought I'd share some pics/info on my new daily drive.
It's a Mk2 XR2 that I bought mid-2008. It's been in storage at a friends house since May but decided last week to have a change and to start using it.
Went to the garage, connected the battery up and it started first time.
Not bad for an almost 25 year old Ford.
Took it for MOT last week and it only failed on a tiny bit of welding on NS inner wing, which is the common place for these to go.
Wasn't surprised about the test as the previous owner had spent £1200 last MOT changing all the shocks, springs, brakes, bushes, etc. It's perfect mechanically now.
Sorted the welding and got it taxed and been using it since weekend.
She is probably one of the earliest remaining Mk2 XR2's on the road. The first ones were registered October 1984 due to initial exhaust issues and mine was 14th October 1984.
Black was an expensive option then too so most people didn't choose it.
The plan for her is to carry on using her as a daily but I will change the oil and filter, tidy up the few marks on the paint (around the door locks/edges where protectors have been) over the next few weeks. I also need to refit the original radio cassette and get rid of the Halfords special gear knob, handbrake cover and mats.
As you can see it still has the original Ford/Carello spot lights that are like hen's teeth these days and also the towing eye cover.
Nipped up to a friends house this morning to make use of his car washing facilities as I live in a flat so my hosepipe doesn't quite reach.

Got a real thing for these, had a Mk2 Festival as my first car and my uncle who died last year aged 45 had a timewarp 1988 example. He bought it when it was 6 mths old, and kept it. Unfortunately he got MS, so was unable to keep using it. Was really sad when we sold it for a pittance, it was before I was driving or I would have snapped it up and wrapped it in cotton wool. It had 30k ish on it, and was original in every way except for that 80's staple of the 'graphic equaliser'!
I've got the correct orginal set of Pepperpots for it. They are all date stamped 09/84 and are going on the car in Spring when the weather is (hopefully) better.
These 5 spoke Ronal Ford things were on when I got it so left them there for now.
Agree that PP's are the only wheel for an XR2.
ETA: Ollie: Shame about your uncle. I bet his car was brilliant.

Ahhh, that takes me back. My first car when I was 17 was a new 1986 Fiesta XR2, Mercury Grey, Alloys, Tinted glass, and a sunroof.
God they were sh!t. Dreadful understeery chassis, very little grip, horrible asthmatic strangled CVH engine and poor brakes. I put 63,000 miles on mine in less than two years ans traded it in for an AX GT which was so much better to drive than the Fester it was untrue.
Crap car, great memories!
