Had one as a hire car a few years back.

Torquey. Very easy do drive on the M/Way. Comfy. Quiet. Good Hi-Fi. Interior was a bit....well....French (but given my predisposition for Jap performance tin boxes it's probably a step up for me).

Seemed pretty good on fuel too.

Didn't handle in the twisties though.....

Perfectly sensible company car to storm down M/ways.....

+ if you go to Van Aaken in Bracknell they will fit a Smartbox which gives you even more torque a 20BHP - I get 800+ mile to a tankful on mine.

well it goes a little like this make sure you find out what hp your 406 will be.they make 2 i think they are 90hp and 110hp they are basicly the same it is just the download they put in the ecu and no they cant be changed only reprogramed with the same data it depends on the price and considering its a company car they prolly gone for the cheaper option.this means its gonna be a bit gutless and have had complaints from my customers about them,on the other hand a lot of my taxi customers have the 110hp 406 and think they are the bees knees
they do go wrong and i could sit here and rant on about there faults but you wont care as its a company car the only thing i would say is make sure you keep to the service schedules they are there for a good reason.

Thanks, guys. Picked up as promised. Judging from the speed it MUST be a 90bbhp version, with 100k on the clock. Sent it for overdue service (from the stamps) this morning and it's getting a valet on Monday (someone else's dirt). Not gone through a tankful yet but is showing 2/3 full after 270 miles from being brimmed. Handles better than the Vectra by some margin, but not as well built and is noisier. It's in 'Diablo red', complete with scratches from commercial washer...

Thanks for info everyone. right. It IS a 90bhp version, running smoother after service and new brake discs and pads. Valet made HUGE difference to inside, very impressed! Filled up once so far, on maily motorway driving and did 700 miles on one tank, worked out to 45mpg, which is liveable on 800 miles per week. Stereo's cr*p. Love to chip it, but not allowed and I'll let the Prelude fulfil the need for Speed at the wk end. getting induction kit soon :-)

do it. a little while ago i had a Bora 110TDi co car. took it in for a superchip, fitted in 40 mins. and what a huge difference. third gear was phenomenal. Power up from 110 to 146bhp. cant remember exact torque figures but it was around 30% increase. Good thing is, you can keep the original chip(s) and when its due for renewal just drop it back in and theyll do the swapover for you.

BTW i didnt notice any decrease in fuel consumption, unless i gave it death. ;O)

Keep up on oil & filter changes, and use good quality oil.

Dont thrash the thing when cold & let the engine idle for a bit to let the turbo cool down. Otherwise bye bye turbo. hello big bill!!

I DROVE OVER THE FRONT 0F A 406 HDI AROUND THREE MONTHS AGO ON THE NORTH CIRCULAR IN MY ARTIC AND CAN SURELY SAY THAT THE PARTS OF THE CAR THAT WAS STILL RECOGNISABLE SEEMED TO BE A VAST IMPROVEMENT ON THE OLD 405.I THINK THE DRIVER ON THE HOLE WAS IMPRESSED TOO ALTHOUGH HE DIDNT SAY SO UNTIL HE HAD STOPPED SHAKING.I DO REMEMBER THINKING THAT THE INTERIOR MUST BE IMPRESSIVE AS THE DRIVER SEEMED TO BE LOOKING AT THE CENTRE CONSOLE AS HE DROVE THROUGH THE RED LIGHT INTO MY PATH ,HAPPY MOTORING MY FRIEND..........
