106 GTi for 1st car.. Good idea or not?
Discussion
Hello all. i have been insured on my mums car for nearly 6 month now, and i'm getting a little board of sharing a car with my mum... espcially as it's a 1 litre yaris lol. everyone has told me a 106 GTi is not a good idea for a first car as people keep saying "you'll just write it off" do you think this is true? i really like them though ha

i have found insurence for £2,600.. is that ok or abit steep
Let me guess - you live at home? I had a mortgage at your age, £2600 a year would have been enough to pay the interest on it. A 1.4 should cost you about half as much - would it be half the fun for you though? You won't write it off unless you're a complete plumb or fantastically incompetent at driving. Buy one cherish it, know your limits, don't take the piss and you will be fine. Even if the op is running around in a st box he will still be paying at the minimum £1500 for insurance.
I'd gladly pay the extra 1100 to have the 106.

Agreed. I think that insurance at that age will be high regardless. Perhaps not £2600 high, though. One has to ask, though, WHY is it so high? Because you are by far more likely to crash at your age. I really would swallow pride and have something you can crash and not worry about for a few years.

If you are like most other young drivers, you'll probably end up doing yourself some damage. Too quick a car for a new driver unless of course you're very sensible.
Something like a VTR or Rallye will be plenty quick enough to start with untill you learn about car control. I speak out of experience here and I didn't even have a quick 1st car and I was still a muppet.
Learn to walk before you can run..... And save yourself some money in the process!

The car will be fine, you as a new driver will be the problem.
When I was 17 I drove in a rather spirited manner, like young lads do. Looking back I suppose I was (unintentionally) dangerous, and did have a number of accidents/incidents.
It makes me sound like an old fart, but in hindsight as a young driver inexperience and bravado do mean that you make mistakes and take chances that more experienced drivers don't.
I don't want to put a downer on your motoring ambitions, start with a small engine and work your way up as you get more experience. (I went from a 1 litre at 17, a 1.4 at 19, to a 3 litre at 23 and now have a 3.6 litre).
Any way enjoy what ever you get!
