Bought this slightly cosmetically challenged 106 GTI for half a bag of sand earlier on in the year. With another £200 odd spending on it I've managed to get it looking from this:

To this:

Really pleased with the car, it goes well, handles even better and is great fun to drive. Bargain hot hatch motoring at it's best really smile

Without being rude the only difference from the before and after seems to be the £40 bonnet hehe

Other than that you got it for a bargain price, and as you say they are great fun to drive quickly biggrin

It's actually had bonnet, slam panel, two headlights, a new clutch and an MOT test which thankfully it passed. The panels were off a white 106 so I sprayed them with rattle cans from Halfords which ended up costing me £20 as well frown

Nice one thumbup What's the paint quality like on the new panels though? Must have been quite hard to get a good finish with only halfords rattle cans.

I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out to be honest, you can see in the picture it is a pretty close match although the whole car is wet. The bonnet is very slightly darker than the wing tops either side, but I think that's more due to the wings having faded to a lighter colour than anything else. I sanded the bonnet down with an airline powered DA and fine wet and dry pads, then applied a couple of coats of halfords red primer lightly sanding with 800 grit in between. Soaked the bonnet after the last coat and got all the dust off with an old wiper blade, then sprayed two coats of diablo red paint, 2 or 3 coats of lacquer and machine buffed and polished with 1200 grit W&D and polishing compound until it looked about right.

You're definitely right though cheaper is better, the car's highish mileage at 120k but has a big folder of service history with it so it seems to have been mostly looked after well smile

Get the rattle cans back out and do the black bumpers body coloured then leave it completely alone cosmetically.

Great fun little cars, jus hope it stays reliable for you. smile

I like.

I have a soft spot for the 106 GTi, the better looking little sister of the VTS IMO.

And lets face it, well all prefer the better looking little sister!

Not going to be doing any more to it cosmetically, wanna keep it standard and tidy so it's worth more when I come to sell or swap it on.

Just need to wait for someone with a decent Impreza Turbo who wants to downsize smile
