My 205 1.6 GTI Laser!
Discussion
Sorry - these aren’t the world's best pictures, It was a bit bright for my camera. The paint is actually a darker/less blue shade of green.
I thought I would share a couple of pics of my "new" 205 1.6 Gti with you. Im 19 so this was the most interesting and fun to drive car my insurance would allow. Having looked at some crazy priced examples and some real sheds, I settled on this, its one of the "laser green" models, 83k on the clock and pretty good condition inside and out.
Completely different to drive compared to my previous cars which have all been modern, full of air bags and power steering jobbies. No mods planned, it’s had the 1.9 speedlines and some very minor bits and im pretty happy with how it looks/goes as it is (and my insurance company aren’t partial to performance extras).
Thanks for looking, Jim

lovely little motor - lift off oversteer tastic!!
Ive not had the pleasure yet. Its my first front wheel drive car for a while, and so far I have only been out on a test drive and got it out of the garage for a clean/service. My insurance kicks in on Tuesday so I will be "aclimatising" to it all next week!

amazing car, and very wise for a young chap, you seem sensible
Cheers , although you almost have to be sensible at 19 - or you end up paying silly insurance premiums. Im hoping it will work out at reasonably low cost motoring for the next year or so, it shouldnt lose too much in depreciation if I keep it clean, and I don't do enough mileage to worry about the mpg too much. The lack of power-steering takes a bit of getting used to when parking, but I have been driving 20ft of pickup truck for the last year so its nice to be able to park in a single space again

Lovely car - top choice. Colour is very cool.
As already said - DON'T change a thing. These cars are fast approaching classic status..if they haven't already.
You just don't see them anymore, especially in good condition.
Just out of curiosity, what's the ins like for you?
When i was your age back in '89 i remember dreaming of owning one. Couldn't afford one though, so i kept my beastie Cortina Mk 5, 2L.
Good days.

Basic quote was around 850 quid full comp, but the wheels added another 80 so its about 930 fully comp. (although theres quite a high comp excess because of my age).
(It probably could have been cheaper - but I don't have any no-claims bonus as I have been insured under a commercial vehicle policy and they wouldnt accept that as no-claims)
Its a big drop from my insurance on my previous car, and the GTI worked out cheaper than most modern small hatchbacks to insure and as said, if I can keep it clean etc it should hold its value much better.

www.205gtidrivers.com well worth registering, if you haven't already.
also in my opinion its well worth putting some good tyres on (admittedly i dont know whats on there now) goodyear eagle f1s are pretty good VFM, and in my experience renewing the suspension will make the car a whole lot more planted in corners and less susceptable to "LOO"
also find your way down to the french bread section

I did register on 205drivers a few months ago for some advice before buying the car. also in my opinion its well worth putting some good tyres on (admittedly i dont know whats on there now) goodyear eagle f1s are pretty good VFM, and in my experience renewing the suspension will make the car a whole lot more planted in corners and less susceptable to "LOO"

It had a brand new set of Falken Ziex tyres just before I bought it, I don't know a whole lot about the various tyres available but the Falkens get relatively good reviews and are in a similar price range to the goodyears you suggested. I don't really want to replace a full set of brand new tyres unless they are really useless. I had a look at replacement suspension setups and they are far better priced than I was expecting. As I say, I haven't been out in the car yet so I'll see how it goes and have a think about changing the suspension.
