You may like this, a friend and I took some pics of our Merc 190 2.5-16 and E30 M3:

Putting them here because you never see the two together so I feel it's nice. Additionally it bigs up my car as it looks pretty good in those pics (not a patch on the M3 though) and when I sell it it might help!!

What a pair! The M3 looks like one hell of a raw weapon & the 190, great looking car.
I saw one today in a sorry state parked in bushes needing a ton of work done, if I had a bit more cash I would return it to it's former glory because as the photo shows they're great cars when theyre looked after.

When I first saw the BMW it looked great but... I felt it was too "modified"; like something too common from the cover of a modified cars magazine. For example the door mirrors are form only; they don't function
Then after seeing it make a genuine 250bhp on the rolling road (Merc: 189, how embarrassing), hearing it and driving it, it grew on me a bit. Seeing it in these pictures it does draw the eye so much more than the Mercedes. Therefore I'm considering modifications to the Mercedes - top priority is that they must not negatively affect the driving experience. And doesn't look like something out of a modified VW Camper magazine on hydraulics. Also I do like to drive it to its limits and would hate if the drive lost any of its finesse. Wheels should not stick out of the arches like is all too common (does anybody think that looks good??)
Inspiration is hard to come by since modification is rare and good modification rarer still, so I open the floor to the crowd of onlookers for opinions please..
How about lowered with the front 'splitter' off a Renault Laguna?
Arches and wheels?
Evo II wheels and lowered?
Lowered on AMG Monoblocks.. (really not doing it for me)
A bit too "show scene" for me - unfair criticism?
And a couple of example of how wrong it can go, IMO
Please express opinions. First thing I will do is swirl/scratch removal.

The only thing I changed on mine was a switch to the 16'' Evo 1's.
Looked into lowering it, but for some reason, I felt the standard ride height looked best.
Leave it alone after that
What engine mod's are you planning?
I really do envy your Silver 190, nothing I have driven since the 16v has made me feel as confident behind the wheel.
