I loved this beast.
1996 525iSE Auto.
Bought it filthy and full of crap. There was a whole new eco-system under the back seat, the headlining was smoked and the seats were grubby as hell. Gliptone saw to the seats and lots of delicate washing left the headlining like new. Carpets were shampooed too.
Side and front indicators changed for clears with chrome bulbs. No other mods, just polished and waxed and driven lots with a big grin. It was the most comfy car I've ever had. Of course everything which could drop off did and it cost £3k in repairs, parts and servicing in 16 months. But included in that I did add a trip computer and see to every little thing, including a respray to the rear bumper and NSR door, new windscreen and servicing by a great local specialist.
Air-con and cooling systems completely replaced. Many bushes replaced front and rear inc dampers on front. Tyres all round, cost a bundle but with all the new bits it handled nicely.

On the plus side financially I paid £2900 for it in late 2004 and sold it in early 2006 for £2600 iirc. So on a lease basis it cost me about £210 per month, not too bad and I really did love it
Then I bought a Passat TDi SE 130 Tip. Bodywork needed a touch of spraying and a mop on the rest. Then I just kept it clean...oh and had it remapped by APS in Brackley. Monster fun

Need an auto as I'm disabled, leg doesn't like the clutch and sometimes the whole changing gear thing is too much like hard work
Bought the Pastit as I was doing more miles and fancied trying one. With all the toys like cruise, climate and heated seats it was a joy. 50mpg on the motorway and mid 30s in town. Was a quiet (on the motorway) and comfy mile muncher but just couldn't stand the clatter in the end. After the BMW it made my ears hurt
Thanks for the comment on the BMW It had 10yrs worth of marks but did scrub up very well and had huge character.
Now back down to 6k miles a year and when the lease ends on my current car I'll go shopping for another old barge. 16 months and counting...
