A few of you might know my drift car, it competes all over Europe & is pretty well known all over. Anyway I thought I'd pop up some pics of its revamp & new makeover thats currently under way. Bit of a build blog thing as it develops.

For those who don't know it, its a 1988 Toyota Soarer, with a 1JZ engine running just shy of 500 bhp & competes in EDC, Prodrift & JDM Allstars. The car is no ricer, its used & abused nearly every weekend, if its not competing at top level competition events, its doing demo's all over the UK & Europe at major events. Remarkably I've had almost two years without a major mishap well until Mondello oooops, which finally nailed the coffin & plus the news of a new major sponsor bounce onboard a complete makeover from scratch was required.

One of the last decent pics I've got of the car still straight before the Mondello "incident" & making flames where its supposed towink thats the wastegate going off biggrin

The car is having a completly new look throughout, RHD Japan have supplied (2) new full bodykits for it & one is for a spare which is nice.

The bodykit & a rough idea of the new colour scheme before sponsors logo's & graphics are applied.

Sumo Power have supplied me some Do-Luck Double Six chrome 18's & she will be looking like a completely different car when finished. SJS Design Factory have been tweaking some provisional designs for the graphics, which will be in super dooper jap spec chrome vinly smokin courtesy again of RHD Japan (who I can't thank enough)

So here is a little diary of events, I'll keep you all posted as she develops. She should be ready for JDM Allstars Wembley round on August the 9th

The Stripdown

She was delivered to Severnside Imports in Gloucester for the start of the makeover process. I've been assisting along the way & we spent the weekend removing the cars original SJS Design artwork & vinyl. Which was some task... mind you it did take simon two days to fit it all!!

2 days work removing the vinyl!!!

Julian of Severnside Imports taking a seat to concentrate on the bent wing & putting it back to as it was before Mondello

Some fairly major treatment required

Finishing off my vented bonnet & intercooler exit hole thing, this actually involved some welding to add some structure as theres not much left...

Fire in the hold!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yikes I managed to set light to the air filter & then the engine bay amongst a few other things. Just as well I had the fire extinguisher to hand or it would have been a trumpton call out....

No major damage but it was close boxedin

The bonnet intercooler exit vent being fixed properly as it was temporary thing before now

My polycarb windows out to get the right finish

Then the new paint Arrived so we had a play!!!!!!

Julian could'nt wait to test it out.. It'll be this colour all over, this was just a test on the bonnet. She's nightfire red with an orange pearl effect, a bit of an experiment to say the least.

Veeeeery nice colour.

Not keen on drifting, but I do like build blogs on interesting cars.

So, lets 'ave it then?

Ok A bit of an update for you all, biggrin

Some shiny bits to look at

Engine bay now blinged up a bit too biggrin

Then a rather large box arrived from Japan, a brand new bodykit, RHD Japan had pursuaded the company who make the kits to dig out the old moulds for a Z20 Soarer, they had'nt made this kit for 8 years!!!

In the box was the largest creepy crawly we've ever seen yikes
Turns out to be just a Japanese house spider biggrin have they got big houses in Japan?? hehe

Test fitting wheels & arch clearance

Body kit comes with an extra "Big Gay Wing" but it kind of suits the cars slightly mad look

Kit is then painted, surprisingly easy to colour match it's funky new colour

Big Spider that could kill you with one stare - check (will probably breed and take over the UK, I've seen War of the Worlds you now, these things happen)

Man hitting things with a big hammer - check

Random fire - check

Massive pile of old worn down tyres - check (try not to mix with random fire)

Holding bonnet down with a car battery that may topple off at anytime - check

A project after my own heart. I love it! Looks pretty good too.

More updates...

Test fitting some new wheels, Do-Luck Double Sixes lick

Once the kit is all fitted it, I then spent the best of two hours trying to work out how to get it on the trailer with the new bodykit fitted hehe Turn's out I might be needing a new trailer eek

She's then delivered to the graphics man for some temporary graphics as I'm supposed to be doing the event at Wembley in it the next morning (its already 12pm) and I've not even got to the graphics man yet!

Simon at SJS has been designing the cars new graphics over the past few weeks & this is the design proposal...

Most of my sponsors artwork is already done, though the car has a base graphic that this lot goes over

However that is nearly 3 days of work to get that lot on & we've only 6 hours left until the Wembley JDM Allstars event, so she gets a few basic stickers for the event that starts in a few hours time

So temporary additions for now

I arrive at Wembley at 5am, having worked & driven all through the night, big thanks to all who helped get it this far in such a quick time. The front bumper is just hanging on in the pic as it has to come off to get off the trailer wink

I'm currently lying 4th in the JDM Allstars championship so qualifying 5th for the Wembley event with the addition of 2 Japanese drivers in the competition was cool.

Survived the event without any damage which is always a bonus!! was expecting some first time out in the new paint scheme scrapage but we got away cleanly bounce

I'll post up some pics as the grpahics go on properly

How would one go about getting a job in a field such as this? Old fashioned spannering and work up?

Yep, it was at Wembley smile He got the top 8 and lost to Steve Evans who eventually came second.

The car looked great and so did the driving. Shame about all the rain frown impressive day all the same. Lydden Hill should be the best round yet if it stays dry.

Come along to some of the events, meet a few peeps & find out who's doing what. Were a very freindly bunch & yes there is lots of work out there, quite a few business's in the field & its pretty interesting work. With unlimited tuning modifications its getting rather interesting!! Think GroupB monsters but rwd only, lots & lots of cars running 500bhp plus. If you want you can always assist me for a weekend (its a fairly easy job as my car rarely goes wrong being a toyota) hehe & I'll introduce you to the clan.

That looks excellent, looking forward to seeing it in some better pics.

Is the intercooler mounted up there to prevent it getting hit in a front end bump with a wall?

Are you doing the next Drift round at Trax? I can't make it unfortunately due to work, but will be at the final event, honest!

Its mounted there to allow better airflow for the rad, I/C is vented through the grill instead

darn, it was looking real good until all the max power style stickers turned up on the paintwork again... frown

shame, tastless advertising ruins all motorsports, but drifitng seems 10x worse than most others. It's still the biggest thing that makes me turn my head and lose interest in it.
