Renault Alpine GTA V6 Turbo
Discussion
My Renault Alpine GTA Turbo, a car I always dreamt of owning when I was blatting around in a 5 Turbo nearly 2 decades ago! Used to go and hassle the guys in the showroom at Renault Birmingham for a test drive but they never let me! 20 years old but still looks a fresh design. Just done a 1100 mile round trip to Le Mans Classic with no problems.
Only a few hundred left on the road. Still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it

At least i got the wheels right
Guys,
Thanks for your comments. Drives well, the turbo is a bit lazy cos its built for economy (got 30mpg on the run to Le Mans and back) as well as power. Need to get it on the boil around 3k revs and then its a lovely wall of boost until nearly 7k. Figures are around 5.7 to 60 and top of 150mph. Had the car two years, spent money on it (as I seem to with getting all my cars just right for me) but as I have 5 cars (this one, facelift 4.0 XJS, Impreza WRX, Triumph Stag, Triumph GT6 and Jag X Type everyday car), the cost of taxing them all and storage is killing the cash flow and my wife has had enough and wants the house finished ( It was my dream car and has lived up to my expectations. Buy a good one and they are great but as with any 20 year old car, buy a shed and its going to hurt the wallet!
Foot to the floor, enjoy the boost!

Great car, one of my favourites. Always amazes me how low the roofline is in the flesh on these.
There's a garage in Ancaster near Cranwell in Lincs that has 3 immaculate cars, an Alpine 110, 310 & GTA lined-up in the window. Nice to see them side-by-side.
I've always hankered after a GTA Turbo or A610, but always worried about damaging the GRP bodywork. How strong is that PRV V6? How easy is it to obtain parts for car and engine?

The bodywork is of pretty high quality, actually. These were still built by Alpine, so they're quite well screwed together. Engine is derived from Renault 25 V6, and generally bulletproof overall.Parts can be an issue, the GTA owner I know seems to gets most of them from the Continent. He's had it for years now, and I've driven it many times (I help him maintain it).
Very underrated and sadly ignored. Up there with the 944/Excel's of the time, and more entertaining imho. The dash is pretty bizarre, but kinda suits the car, strangely. Alpine had been building rear engined cars almost as long as Porsche had at this point, and doing it almost as well. I was always sad to see the demise of Alpine, proper sports cars with lots of racing pedigree.
Few years back, it was either this or an S2. I did eventually get the porsche though,as I got sick of looking at dog rough Alpines.
Have to say that while there are still a few rough cars out there, due to the cost of parts most have ended up being broken for spares as they are worth more that way. I toyed with getting the S2 944 but went for the Alpine for 2 reasons - 1st was I had always wanted one, 2nd 944's are everywhere, less than 250 of these on the road
Apart from the respray, seats and tuning bits, all of which where my choice to do, the car has been very tough and reliable. Just taken it to Le Mans Classic, 1100 miles round trip over 4 days and not a single problem. Not many 20 year old cars you can do that in.
