Hi peeps, regular reader of pistonheads and decided to join up, Thought I might aswell post my car, Now I know it's not to everyone's tastes but I do love my american barges and I got this for free trading in my 5 Series that was um on it's way out. The V8 is just stunning and when you put the foot down it certainly shifts for a 2 tonne barge (6.8 to 60) That and it has every gadget imaginable. To be honest I just like to be different and it has an digital dash lol

  • prepared for a ripping biggrin
here it is.

Are these the ones that go 100k miles between servicing & run on 4 cylinders at times?

Despite the fact it's American, and fwd, I secretly really love the big ol' STS Seville getmecoat

What's it like on the fuel and service costs? The prices are extremly tempting.

bit of a sleeper in some ways are these STS' IMO, ample lazy grunt and a bit of luxury, a nice combo if ever there was one!

Hey peeps. Glad you like it, To answer a few of the questions.

Yup engine service is every 100k all that needs done is oil and filters and the computer tells you the life in % left of each and the auto box oil etc.

Fuel isnt to bad 5-8mpg when booting it and 19avg 28 on a good motorway cruise.
servicing parts are cheap from usa being gm and most replaceables are available here.

As a sleeper its great the in gear dashes are very quick and the noise is a nice deep v8 gumble biggrin

Got a new exhaust coming for it that transforms it soon, and im at work but the pics seems to not load, same for anyone else or is imageshack having a hairy.

cheers peeps.

Stallone drove one of these in the Get Carter remake. Americans have been building RWD V8's since day one, what possessed them to put it sideways!?!! Kudos for thinking outside of the box though.

How can it get away with 100k between services?! And why would they build them like that when they could make so much money on fleecing customers come service time!

The northstar system has been around over 30 years and unlike us brits americans dont take kindly to things that break all the time, all its needs is oil and fluid services doesnt need full engine services eg spark plugs etc till every 100k

Nice motar mate... I like different too.

Read somewhere that if you lost all the water the Northstar engine would do some magic stuff and you could run without it in an emergency. Could be talking shyte but if it is the case, how does it work?
I think I heard Clarkeson rabit on about it when the caddy was available through vauxhall dealers.

Hi thanks bud, good to meet other folks who like different lol. Here is the feature you where right about a bit more indepth biggrin

Another feature of the Northstar engines is a "limp home" mode that allows the engine to continue running if all the coolant is lost. If the PCM senses an overheating condition, it temporarily disables up to half of the cylinders. This pumps enough air though the engine to keep temperatures from getting hot enough to cause any damage. Even so, GM says the vehicle should not be driven more than 50 miles in the limp-home mode.

Another unusual feature you may see is a liquid-cooled alternator on the DeVille and Seville. Cadillacs are crammed with electrical accessories that put quite a load on the charging system, so using liquid cooling helps prolong the life of the alternator

Interesting that - I've been working on my 325i the last few days and it's the first car I've ever worked on that has it's own air duct to cool the alternator.
