The engine is very tempremental, almost knackered. But on the pluse side there is a possibility of dropping a D5 engine and ECU into it. I'm tempted to do it, but have never really done anything on that level before..

Don't waste your money on the engine transplant! Enjoy the car for what it is, and save the £££'s for something nicer in the future.
