What New Car to Buy

Hi All,

Would like some help choosing a new car. I am 24 and want to spend £5000-£7000, due to insurance and fuel and don't want to get a big engine. I have looked at BMW 3 series coupe, Alfa 147, Audi TT, Mini Cooper, Merc Clk, VW Golf, BMW Z3

I would like something a bit sporty, and maybe on the new style number plates so its not too old but dont know what to get. Any help would be great.

Quite a diverse choice of cars in your list. Can you be any more specific in terms of what you want from the car, what your needs are and what you will mainly be using it for?

My instant thoughts are along the lines of Clio 182 Cups, ep3 Civic type-R and my personal favourite - the DC2 Integra Type-R.

MX-5s are also a favourite among the PH crowd and may be worth a look. The 3 series is a good car but on the heavy side (for the e46) and as such unless you do go for a bigger engine (325i and above) you probably won't know which is the driven end in the dry. Also all the six cylinder versions have similar economy (about 31 mpg average) so if you do go for a 3, may aswell get the bigger engined ones.

Just to throw in my 2 100ths of a US currency unit - most TTs in your price bracket will be ropey and unloved (unless you're very lucky).
