Hello
I've recently changed from a 1.1 Peugeot 206, to a 1.8 focus zetec. My average journey to the nearest town (across an A-road for 7 miles, then 11 miles on a country B-road) cost me around £6 to get there and back, in the 1.1 .... being a 1.1 I did drive it fairly hard to get it going. (that car apparently averages 45mpg.)

If I were to complete this same journey in the Focus, (approx 37mpg) on the same road, driving economically due to enough performace now, how much more do you reckon the trip will cost me?
Being useless at maths, I guessed around an extra £2, but I could be very wrong.
Any ideas please?

Thanks a lot
Louisa

Round trip of 36 miles @ 45mpg with fuel @ 114.9p/l = 11.6p/mile = £4.17
Round trip of 36 miles @ 37mpg with fuel @ 114.9p/l = 14.1p/mile = £5.07

Not sure where you get £6 from, that would equate to 31.3mpg at the same fuel prices.

Average of 45 mpg will be higher than when louisa 'drive's it fairly hard to get it going' biggrin 30 ish mpg seems about for spirited driving? I know my old clio 1.4 was never that economical when driven hard..

Tbh cant really compare fuel consumption between driving hard with one vehicle and econmically in another!

I'll tell you what, small engined cars are useless on MPG when "driven". Ive been averaging 23MPG in my 1.4 during spirited driving. If road tax wasnt such a bugger, I'd be considering a v8 right about now biggrin

From what I read the 1.8 Focus engine doesn't seem much quicker than the 1.6 or any more economical than the 2.0 unfortunately.
