Yeah, none of your Corsas, Novas, or Saxos here!

Always loved the Ford Capri, always wanted a 3.0s or a 2.8 Injection but I can keep dreaming!

Was looking on Ebay a couple of days ago, and came across a Capri abou 10 miles away. Arranged to view it on Friday, got there on Friday, half an hour later, deal was done.

Needs a bit done to it, new battery, exhaust, 4 new tyres, and a couple of bits of rust sorted out. On this basis it has to be trailered to my house - and that wont be done for another few weeks frown

But anyway, i'm pretty proud, paid it out of my own money... not many 17 year olds in my area have a car not paid by their parents these days. It may not be the best colour, needs a bit of work, but hey, it's a project, and it should be good fun to work on.

Anyway, a bit about the car -

1986 D registered - so one of the last ones.
Has the interior of a 2.8 Injection, and has the 7 spoke RS wheels aswell.
1.6 Litre Pinto engine
Maroon colour

I'm in love. I will be posting progress reports throughout, as I want to share my experiences (and pains) about having a nice project to work on.

Here it is, at the guys house for now, should be about 2 weeks until I get my hands on it.

And the price of all this? £450 pounds. Lovely.

What a great first car (I think)!

Cheers mate.

Got a little plan for it -

Get it running
Make sure everything nechanical wise is ok
Respray in same colour as the 280 Brooklands
Rear debadged
Anthracite Wheels
Possibly a slight tint.

Nice subtle changes that just make it look that bit nicer, but opinions are greatfully recieved, because it might change!

Heres a quick mock I done on Photoshop.

Thanks. Here's another mock form the front - will go with this wheel colour, nice and smoked, but not too in your face.

Great choice of car..........I've had a few and my 1st was a 1.6 Laser. Good on you for bringing it back from the dead.

Whilst respraying in Brookland's green would look great, unless it's a full bare-metal job (including door shuts and engine bay) it could end up looking half-baked.......and expensive.

Whilst the deep burgandy might not be the best colour, it's not bad and can still look good.

Yeah sounds good, going to try my best to bring the Burgundy back up to colour, the respray is the last thing on my mind at the moment.

That has to be a really great first car, it will teach you how to handle a rear drive car-oversteer, understeer etc.

Well I went back up last night, she's all mine now, got the keys on the desk and the old MOT certificates and a Haynes manual - The car is still at the guys house, waiting for a trailer to come free.

So I took a few pictures... it was a kind of really low light and was only handheld, so had to use flash, apologies for the crap pictures. But hopefully some of you can give some advice.

So the main bits of rust are on the bonnet. I'm in 2 minds over this, cut out most of the rust and filler it in, or just replace the bonnet and respray the whole thing that green colour. The filler is cheaper (as I am a bit tight for cash at the mo), and the respray wouldnt be until a few months anyway, probably about half a year so... difficult decision. I think i'll just cut it out and filler it for now, just as peace of mind until I can source a replacement in the same colour.

There's also rust on the bumpers, but I am going to get them sanded down, evened out and powdercoated, so that isnt a problem.

There was really bad rust patches on top of the doors, the guy who I bought it from has tried to cut most of this out, and fiberglassed over the top of it, theres a bit left but that shouldnt be a problem.

Engine bay, the rust is mainly on the side lip, I'm woried by the right strut mounting so I'm going to get a professional onto that, I noticed new strut tops on eBay ut involves cutting into metal and rewelding, but we'll see.

And finally the interior, straight from a 2.8 Injection, I'm in love. Retro-cool.

So that's my plan of action, get her running and through an MOT, and get her insured. Then the real fun starts!

Not sure - cant find anything on registration locations pre 2001, there is a list on Wikipedia though, and the first two letters on the last part of the number plate - DM - say Shrewsbury. And i've handily left all documents in the car, 20 miles away. Oops.

EDIT : Seems last 2 letters in the reg mean Edinburgh - ties in with all the MOT documents from 2001> being nearby in Fife.

Despite the rust, she's still a lovely old thing.

Those are all classic Capri rust spots too. The strut mount is probably the most serious, although it's often only surface rust there. You can normally find rust on the door bottoms and all the wings. The roof normally stays rust free though biggrin

Good luck and keep us posted.
