I have been harking back to the first car i bought , a MK 5 2LT Cortina , over 20 years ago .And I am now considering buying another one for the weekends, or even driving it all the time. Fed up with the new Passat and looking for something different .I am no good at the engine thing , you know with spanners ,hammers , oil and other fluids. Am I mad or do you think it might be a good idea and work.
I do about 20,000 plus miles per year about 80% on the motor way M1 M25.
One good thing wife said she will not drive or even sit in the passenger seat said i wont look good picking the kidds up from the school next to all the 4x4s. Told her that was the point in getting one .

20,000 miles a year is an awful lot for an old car, especially if you won't be able to tinker with it to keep it in best shape. Probably won't be all that good on the motorway either frown But if you want one and are going to use it as a weekend only/ fun car, go for it if you want. Learning basic mechanics skills would be very beneficial though if when it comes to running older cars.

Thanks, i think you might be right about the weekend use only. I seem to be kidding myself that it would be ok all the time .

Look after it & it should be ok, especially if fitted with a 5 speed Sierra box.

Buy a 2 litre Cortina & it has basically the same engine as a 2 litre Sierra or Transit (Tranny is different CR though).

Finding a good one these days is like looking for a needle in a haystack, overuse in banger racing means they're now very rare cars

I drove my mk1 Escort 1100 estate 90 miles today down the A38 to an oldskoolford car meet at a steady 50mph there & back & the car didn't miss a beat.
