Hey guys, I've not been on PH for a couple of months due to work commitments, alas the days of me spending almost my entire working day on here are long gone...

But while I was away I bought another car to add to the fleet (Woo Hoo! bounce)

As petrol prices are rising to ridiculous levels and the greens seem to be taking over, I decided to go and buy a nice sensible family bus. A calypso red 540i powered by a very sensible M60 4.0 V8 with an equally sensible 286 bhp biggrin

After getting her checked out I found no nasty Nikasil issues (my main worry) and snapped her up! I've always wanted a 540i Touring as nobody seems to look twice at it, very stealthy...
The car is immaculate having had one previous owner, a fully stamped main dealer service history and she came with 12 months MOT and 6 months tax.

So here she is:

A nice arty shot with my M535i:

I've just had a full Inspection II service carried out, the aircon regassed, the suspension bushes done and had the lower half resprayed to sort out a some stone chips and a bubbling that was comming through on the door bottoms. Unfortunatley I won't be home again until May to try her out frown until then my old man is looking after the old beastie.

I have to say thanks to PHer Hammerhead who gave me loads of advice and told me what to look out for before I bought her.

I see this thread is going nowhere fast, so I'll add a gratuitous engine pic:

It makes a nice woofly 'brum brum' noise when you put your foot down and everything...

Hi Charlie!

I looked high and low for one with a six speed manual, in the end I found just one. It was shagged and had covered a fairly impressive 240,000 miles.

This one has one of the first 'intelligent' auto's, it's a five speed jobby that adjusts itself to your driving style. It also has quite a nifty little 'sport' mode which locks out fifth and holds the gears up to the red line. I've had muchos fun with that...

I'm still looking for an M5 by the way, how's your going at the mo?

I like it - very stealthy. My dad had a manual saloon in the very same colour when I was but a nipper. Good days.

That doesn't sound too good.

You know, I could really do with the 3.8 engine and gearbx to go into my old M535i...

Cheers matt, I'd have loved one with a proper gearbox, but they are like hens teeth but the auto isn't as bad as I thought it would be, it's great when stuck in traffic!

thumbup Looks very nice

Now, for your next car, it should have one of these in the engine bay

biggrin

On a serious note, if you're after a 3.8 engine and box, keep your eyes on the specialist breakers, they do pop up from time to time!

She's a stunner, shame about the auto box.

Those tyres look comedy huge though, funny how you wouldn't see a top spec 5 series nowadays with anything less that 18s!

Cheers for the replies.

Andy sx - how old are you mate? I'm 28 and only pay 380 quid fully comp for it (group 19). I got the policy through Adrian Flux, it was the cheapest by miles.

D T W - I'm definatley on the look out for a decent S38B38 engine and gearbox to go into my E28. I've been looking around the specialist breakers but still had no luck. I might just have to buy a proper M5 to make up for it!

Thanks Paul, it looks quite nice all polished up and shiny!

Now the bodywork is sorted, when I get home I'll spend a day getting her all polished up properly.

The one thing I have to do is replace the badges in the wheel centres, I think then she'll be perfect.

By the way, does anybody know where I can get a second hand load cover for the boot? I need one as it was the only thing that was missing.

Bob, unfortunately im only 23, and ballsed up my no claims so only just coming back to one year in April, so i would have thought insurance would be close to death via anal rape for me, hence looking out for a decent td instead. although i would love the v8, i somehow doubt it wil be possible for a while yet, and by that time VED and petrol will be stupidly inflated to fund Browns gut and the other governmental twirps audatious spending sprees, ill have a 899 cc mini frown

That's a bit of a pain. Though the TD is a good motor with loads of torque, I think the E34 525tds makes about 145bhp and it feels more brisk than the equivalent 520i plus they are relativley frugal. I don't do a huge mileage each year so I can bear getting 28 mpg on a motorway cruise...

Talking of Mini's, there was an absolutley mint '79 Clubman for sale just round the corner from me, fully restored and loads of fun to drive. My dad has had 5 or 6 Minis so I've got a bit of a soft spot for them.

in actual fact i dont have anything against minis, and wouldnt mind one for racing, but its the day to day stuff i need to take care of, and wouldnt mind wafting around in something a bit different from the early 20's usual motors, and im currently gteting sub 20 mpg out of my bravo hgt... so most things will be an improvement!

its either going to be a 3 or 5 series derv estate, or an alfa 156 2.4jtd sportwagon for my next car, along with the latest hair brane idea i have had for a project car / track beast. but need to do a bit of saving first, and some frugal driving aswell...

Top car, I have a E39 3.0D Tourer, with what appears to be a rare 5 speed box, all the cars I looked at were Autos, Love the thing to death, I can even live with the 34mpg on mixed city/motorway driving.
heres a queation for the BMW buffs, can I retrofit a 6 speed into the car without major drama, that would make the slap up the M1 a breeze, I have been offered a 6speed from a low mileage M3 that met an premature end a few years ago and has sat in a office as a foot rest [dont ask]
