That time of year again! my Peugeot 206 needs its MOT. Had it three years and it hasnt passed first time yet, and I'm pretty sure this time will be no exception. I'm not really very mechanically minded, so has anybody got any idea what may be wrong with it on the basis of these faults?

1 - the main one - usually first time I start it every day, it cuts out. Several times. (I am careful that I'm not stalling it) - possibly the alternator? Plus the day before it took three goes to start it pulling out of a petrol station (although in that case the engine was warm)

2 - there is a hell of a lot of sideways travel in the gear lever when in gear. It's not dropped out of gear yet but is this anything to worry about?

3rd fault wont be an MOT failure but it's just plain annoying - CD player wont work for ages when its cold.

Anybody got any thoughts? Sound like a fail?

  • edit* Not to mention the recurring exhaust problems it has. 6 failures in the last year and a half. Plus before anybody says 'cut your losses and sell it' believe me I am going to - as soon as I can. Wanted something different for a while now anyway.

Sounds like a typical 206 imo.

It is - a mate of mine had one a few years back and had no problems with it. Few people have said with Peugeots you either get a great one or a ste one. Guess which I ended up with? frown

It'll PROBABLY be the Idle Control valve - it's a typical french problem - had it on my 106 and my friends 206.

My 106 had an awful lot of play in the gearstick, but didn't ever drop out of gear so I didn't worry!

Thanks - much appreciated - is the Idle Control valve an easy/cheap fix? I wondered if it might be tha after I read another thread about a 106 in this forum somewhere.

I think the parts are usually about £25 to £40 depending on who you get them from + any labour?

I'm not sure if you're allowed to specifically mention other websites/forums on here, but needless to say, there are free forums out there which may be able to advise from experience.

Type "206 info" into a search bar and choose the one that most closely matches it wink There is the odd idiot on there, but on the whole they're a friendly and helpful bunch of people.

It's luck of the draw on the car - I don't personally know anyone who's had anything (other than wear and tear) on their 206's. Best of luck sorting it.
