I've just traded in 2 Hondas (a CRX and a Civic VTi 4 door) for a 1991 944 turbo. She cost me £9k (which is a lot for one of these) and had just over 90,000 on the clock. Can anyone else let me know of anything that compares, just out of interest.....

280 BHP (with boost enhancer)
25mpg
my 2 year old daughter fits in the back
carries a weeks shopping
£400 6,000 mile insurance
160mph
ABS, Air/Con, lecky everything, leather
Awesome build quality.

The only other thing I'd considered was the Renault A610, but you try finding one, and then try to service it....

Any one of a number of TVRs, if you need the back seats, a Cerbera.
Maybe not for £9k, but certainly £14k and with a lot less than 90k on the clock and 350bhp

Has to be reliable and a daily driver..... and £14k is a hike over the average 944 turbo price.. stay within the budget and what can you get?

Just options. 944 Turbo's a fine choice. As I'm sure you've no doubt found out. Have fun. Insurance seems a bargain too.

Yep, bring on the BMW M's.... I'm trying to think why I didn't look for one now....or the Lotus Carlton, I've had a Subaru, and the interior was just the MOST boring place I've ever sat in.... the Lancia is a bit fragile, the RX7 a poor copy, the FTO, Celica...err no.

Nice list then....M5, M3, Lotus Carlton, A610 or 994 turbo...the others are good value but not in the same league really...

how about an alfa 75 3.0 seats 4 not quite as fast but sounds 10 times faster and I got mine for 600 quid so leaves you some spare change for repaires. or a cheep 944 for when it goes wrong.

CONGRATULATIONS you have chosen the greatest performance car in the world for under 10k, im sure others will disagree.......scooby owners etc.Your car will still be as good as it is now in ten years time !
or even 20 years time ( assuming you look after it )
i have the same with MO30 suspension etc. They are renound for handling 0.9 g on skid pan 0-62 5.5 sec etc.
Do yourself a favour and keep it forever !

Let me know where the Lotus Carlton Shop is selling them at £9000 and will get down there straight away!!

Don't forget the Audi S2 230bhp turbo charged 4wd 4 seater coupe, but don't tell everyone 'cause I'm waiting to buy one next!!

You sound the responsible type, back seat, shopping, reasonable insurance and staying within budget.
And although the Carlton is an awesome bit of kit,Engine rebuilds cost thousands and parts will get rare...a quick way to terminate your marriage!!
944 ,a mate of mine had one and found it hard to sell-on,but youve got a badge to respect and super car looks as well as a reliable motor.
BM sounds like VFM and and fun at the same time or the the Scooby with a custom interior.

ahah, what a timely thread....
thinking (as always) about selling my Elise to buy a car that my 3 month old daughter can go in...

same sort of problem - 20k miles a year, so mpg is relevant (do you really get 25mpg out of a 944 Turbo?)

don't want a car that's heart stoppingly expensive to run (just mild palpitation type of expense will do) or a depreciation nightmare....

A610.... too fragile?
part of me would love a cerb..... but tales of massive running costs just scare the hell out of me...

but 230bhp just isn't enough...
what will the S2 stretch to with reasonable reliability?

NDT,

Look at my profile for running costs. I've had an S2 for 5 years and 50,000 miles and a Turbo for 18 months and 26,000 miles. Neither are exorbitant

Agoogy - well done you have arrived at the best, fast, understated, badged, practical car there is (not that I am biased)

the RX7 a poor copy

wtf?

Not sure what you mean by this ....what is it copying? Certainly the series 4/5 was a copy of the 944...but the series 6/7 no way! I don't think you could say it is a copy of anything...quite revolutionary in fact...

not that I am a biased rx7 owner or anything!!!
