Another 'Toy'......2.3L Audi Engined VW Type 25 Transporter
Discussion
....also known as 'Colin'!
You may have seen this for sale on here a while ago...well my girlfriend and I have been toying with the idea of getting a Van to convert for use for camping/surf trips etc, and we recently bought this!
We've been on the look out for a good one for a while, so we were stoked to come upon this little beauty. It's only had 2 owners (we're the 3rd) and it's been stored inside for the most part so it's overall rust free (give or take the odd spot which i'm dealing with) As you probably know these older VW's are plauged by rust problems so we decided to fork out a little extra for one in good condition, rather than buying a shed which we were constantly battling to put right! If I had the time and money I would've gone for a split screen or bay window camper but we decided that we wanted something reliable while retaining a bit of 'old school cool'. Also another added bonus is that the previous owner fitted it with a 2.3L Audi engine so it rips as well!! We plan on boarding the inside and tidying it up so we can sleep in there etc, but not go to the extent of turning it into a full on camper. It's also lowered on proper suspension and has 16" Fusch Porsche wheels.
So far we have spent the entire weekend detailing it so it's looking as good as new now. Fully washed, clay barred then polished and waxed it so the paintwork is looking excellent again. I'll get a few more pics up as time goes on and also post a few more details about what we plan to do it. Let's just hope this doesn't take all my time so I don't finish the Citroen! I guess at least the girlfriend is helping with this one!
Here are the pics anyway..they will tell the story..

It's around 180Bhp according to the previous owner. I'm inclined to think that's pretty accurate given the acceleration! It's really fun to drive too and the noise is fantastic, although i'm not going to drive it hard as I want to look after it well-it's 20 years old so i want to care for it accordingly! I'd say it'd be good to turn it into a 'race van', and with a close ratio box it would be very quick. The current box isn't geared towards boy racing obviously! Besides, I have the Citroen for speed!
This weekend we made the trip up north to a T3 specialist in huudersfield to get the beast checked over and a few bits and pieces doing. We were very pleased with the synopsis as they said it was a very clean and rust free van, all dead straight which was awesome! We had loads of bits done which needed to be done, mainly suspension and braking and bushes etc, just routine stuff. We had excellent service and the guys really knew EVERYTHING about the van - damm impressed! They sorted out the suspension so it's now riding on fully adjustable avo's and springs, powerflex steering bushes, gear linkage adjusted so it's now real easy to change gear (was tricky before) also the brakes and handbrake are way better, and it drives great! Dead pleased! It rides a little higher on the new springs but it's greatly improved handling wise. Needs a clean after the long haul but here is how 'Colin' looks now:
Cheers Boys!
Was good to see you guys at the weekend too Crossie - Tommys car is amazing!
Yes he is pretty fast, I love the noise of it too! Most people do look pretty suprised when you hack past them sounding like a corvette on steroids!
Love cleaning it too as weird as it may sound. You start to really appreciate how timeless the angles and bodywork design are.
Future plans are to kit out the inside for camping/comfort, but retain the originality. I don't want it to become a gypsy wagon or anything. It has to be cool! Want to get matching front seats, perhaps a retrim, clean the matting in the front more, new small speakers for the front door cards, then onto the engine. It could do with a proper bell housing adaptor which you can get in south africa. I have found a place that sells them in Germany so we'll see. It should be better than the home made affair that's currently being used (although it's not too bad to be fair) Also want an airbox to quieten it a little for long journeys, and a smaller tailpipe. SOmething like a long slim stainless pipe to keep it old school. I've never been one for massive exhausts!
Oh and a wheel refurb too-really want to bring out the mirror finish on the rims!

Glad you like the van, Andy who you got the van from is one of my best mates and I know he put a lot of time and effort into doing the conversion
That engine really does sing in the back and surprises a lot of people as you go past them
Oh and the Fusch's came off my Porsche 944 Turbo, keep the centers black if your'e going to refurb as I think they set the van off well- just my opinion
Enjoy
