Right - I've been putting this off for ages but the last 2 days have broken me and although I'll be shouted off this site for asking the following, I need some advice!

I currently own a Honda Accord Type-R. I love it and have only owned it 6 months but this month it's all gone horribly wrong. I had to spend £360 on tyres which is fine, I have no issues with that atall. At the same time I was told I need new brakes all round so I budgetted £400 to have them replaces next month. Again I dont have an issue with that. The problem is that on my way to work on Wednesday my clutch went. I dropped it straight into Honda (ok I should have gone somewhwere cheaper but no one could do it before xmas and I need my car) and was told it would cost £850 for a clutch plate and slave cylinder. They then called me back and told me the Fly Wheel had cracked and it was an extra £350 for that. So I'm now looking at £1200 for the clutch work on top of the £360 on tyres - and 2 weeks before christmas.

I have also just moved house and even though I'm on a hill in a really really good area, the postcode I fall under is a not so good area. My premium has therefore just gone up by £400 a year too.

For me that was the final straw so I'm going to sell and go to.......Diesel. Im sorry! My commute has just gone from 12 miles to 85 miles a day and the car is a guzzler anyway so I cant justify £400 a month on fuel ontop of these other costs.

So the help I need is - what should I get with somewhere between £3k and £5k to spend on a diesel thats hopefully not completely soul destroying.

Sorry to hear that.

But given that the Type R will be in good shape after the work has been done for a long time to come, will it be cheaper overall to hold onto it?

You are unlikely to get your expenditure back on a sale, and a diesel car may require this work to be done soon after purchase too.

I say keep the Type R and enjoy it for a while!

This is the advice im being given by most people! I think I'm just angry with it at the moment and want to go in for a quick get rid, when in reality I would absolutely hate getting into a diesel every morning!

I may well hang onto it as you're right, I will just have lost out big time on resale etc...but if I do decide to go to the dark side is there anything half decent I could get?

Make sure you see the old fly wheel when it's removed.
Lots of companies lie about it needing replacing.

thats what I was thinking. Theres a guy here who used to work for Honda as a service manager. When I said they needed to replace the clutch plate he joked that the next call would be "sorry but the fly wheel needs replacing too".

Sure enough 20 minutes later.....

Im sure they could just grab any old fly wheel lying around and show me that instead and I'd be none the wiser anyway!
