Codename: Long Haul - TVR
Discussion
After a short while contemplating my future, working crap jobs for shite pay while trying to get back on my feet and through xmas, I thought the best way of escaping from it was to make a bit of a PH Blog type thing about my project, Codenamed Long Haul!
At CITP II earlier in the year, I bumped into fellow PHer NTEL who, after chatting about various things in life, mentioned that he had just taken the delivery of a Tasmin Racer and as is the norm in these situations, I happened to mention that I was considering doing something similar with a road going Tasmin as my entry into TVR ownership.
To my surprise, NTEL had been given a second Tasmin Racecar as a spares car for his own project and told me I could buy it for a bargain basement price of £200....
His only word of warning was this:
"You've not seen it yet though" followed by a giddy, evil genius type giggle
This was a case of pick up the Tasmin or it gets cut to bits for the rollcage...I couldnt let that happen to another Wedge, so I put the plans together to go down to Clitheroe and collect the shed and get it back to its base in Huddersfield.
Thankfully it was dark when we arrived and it didnt look that bad although the sheer amount of work needed to get the Tasmin back to its former glory was becoming obvious
The poor old girl was full of scrap metal, knackered tyres, rusty steel wheels and spiders so it did look a lot worse than what it is
The intital plan was to prep and enter it into at least one race next season, but the plan has changed
The idea now is to spend more time preparing it and do it right, including lifting the body and rollcage together, shotblasting the chassis (in remarkable condition considering the last owner crashed it on the track where it promptly set fire to itself ) stripping the suspension and bushes, fitting all new polybush kit all round, Nitron dampers & racing springs, vented brakes etc
There is no engine or gearbox at the moment, but we're open to options on this one
Its going to get either an original 2.8i Ford V6, 2.9 12v V6 or a 24 Cosworth V6..which ever engine goes in, it will be slightly breathed on that much is certain
We inspected the chassis and suspension today to see exactly what we have to do and the prognosis is rather good:
The chassis is straight and pretty much rust free barring a single tubular section in the nose cone which is bent, batter and rusted through, but its a simple task. The outriggers are in remarkable condition considering its age and life...the paint on the offside outrigger still shines
Here are a couple of photos of codename: Long Haul
Big thanks to NTEL
Big big thanks to Stainless "Newly Oppointed Engineer" Steve

aah old blue no.7...
good to hear the chassis prognosis was positive, after a bit of work she'll be up and about in no time mate!
certainly looking a bit sorry for itself though in those pics, will definetely be great to see it back to its former glory at some point again though! (whats this about a big RV8 i saw in the Wedge forums?!...
BTW, sent you a PM earlier)

Ta chaps
Its definitely going to be a long standing project to get right (around 18 months hopefully) but I wouldnt be doing any of it without my old mucka Stainless_Steve...hes been a real help with all this, plus those that have contributed advice, information and even those loonies that are contributing the odd part here and there

So now we need a dry day so we can unbolt/cut the bolts holding the body to the chassis.Looks like we will need to get a few of the locals to help lift the body off.
Better have a few and let the locals know
Howdo muckaBetter have a few and let the locals know
Let me try and source a cover first before we go lifting the body off mate...with the weather that I think we're going to get (Think its going to be a bad winter) then we need two covers at the very least, but that is indeed next on the list
Have a few beers? You'll already be on that wont ya?
v15ben: Definitely a surreal moment matey..still have to explain that to people who ask She'll never be back on the road mate, but I'll find a stretch of private road and take you for a blat, if not, maybe on a track day or something
I'll be updating the blog/diary/postwhore thing anytime that I source something or we get around to carrying out anymore work on the old girl
