Right then,
I'm 17 in a couple of weeks (can't wait!) and, of course, i want to drive. Now as i'm sure you are aware, my insurance costs were looking to be worse than Kimi's bar bill... However, having found a company that will insure 17-year-olds, i have been thinking of the idea of classic car insurance (25 years or older). First of all, is this a good idea and second, what would be your suggestions?? I've been thinking Mk1 Golf GTI but i will welcome any ideas.
I REALLY don't want to have to choose the saxo/corsa/106 with more speakers than the house of commons route...
Thanks,
Matt

Ask if you accumulate NCB, some classic policies do not. Can you get on a classic policy at 17?

I think so. My friends first cars where a Morris Minor, a Triumph Spitfire and then an MGB all on classic car insurance.

But as said, you may not build any no claims. He didn't and I've herd this is quite common practice.

I didn't have one for my first car, but what about a kit car. I think most classic insurance companies are over 21 at least.. I think MSM insurance do 17 yr olds. I could be wrong. I had a Midas Gold at 19 - amazing car to drive, kind of odd looking I guess, buit I liked it.
The same company still insure my TVR - which I might add is much cheaper than you thinkwink
Or - I would get a 106 xsi 1.4 or a rallye 1.3... alllllways wanted one of those cloud9

Excellent idea to go down the classic route.....driving

Insurance costs are excessive for anyone under 21 really...

I would suggest something like a GOOD mk 1 or 2 Ford Escort, 1.1 or 1.3, easy to work on, cheap to buy, classic insurance, also teach you quite a bid about the mechanical side of cars, before they were all laden with computer chips in the 80s onwards........

Just be careful of the dreaded rust bug, get one with a long MOT and you'll be OK...

mk 1 escort would be a great first car, rwd and relatively light. The only problem? Been looking for a cheap one for the last few years, even a rusty snotter will demand stoopid money at the moment.

Forget the mk I golf rare expensive and you wont get insurance at 17 if you do it will be in the 1000's. Also you will probably end up with a broken golf and be lucky if your not broken as well. Get some cheap low insurance banger and insure it third party only with a massive excess as it wont be worth claiming on. Put up with boring cars for a few years while you get some no claims and more importantly driving experience.

A chap I work with was in a similar situation regarding insuring a first car, he found that US imports were much cheaper to insure, a V6 Mustang being cheaper than a 1.4 Corsa for example.

Drive something unusual and you're less likely to be a boy-racer it would appear!

Good luck.

My first car was a 205XS. Its a seriously over looked car, its one down from a 1.6GTi and has a 1360cc dual-choke carb and managed to push out a rather lively 80/85bhp, which for a light car was pretty good. It also has very short gearing, similar if not the same box as fitted to the 106 Rallye. The suspension was a bit soft, though some stiffer shocks and springs would sort that. It revved really well too and was pretty damn nippy. 0 - 60 around the 9.5/10 second mark. When I were at school it certainly was one of the faster cars in the car park, though it didn't shout about it (aside from the 1.9GTi alloys, which are thoroughly reccomended too).

I did however get a bit over-confident and seriously binned it, which I was gutted about. Still a year or so later I decided to buy another cos it was so much fun for very little cash. My first, although needed a new box, was £310 with 48k on the clock! Not bad for an 88 car!

Do it! 80's sporty warm hatch! biggrin

PS. Insurance group 8

If I were you I would bite the bullet and go for a fiesta or corsa etc, as most come with a years free insurance. As you are only 17 there is plenty of time to get the car that is right for you.
Just try to think about the money that you will save not having to get MOT, servicing, breakdowns. Just my opinion but thats what I would do.

I had a Midas Gold as my first car; rare, amazing to drive, strong, inexpensive to run, cheap to insure!

What more could you want?!

(I often push the Gold on this type of thread, and it always gets ignored. Anybody know why? Is it the looks?)

What about the insurance the year after, which will have to be fully comp if the cars on finance. Might save on service etc but then you have depreciation and finance costs which will be substantial and probably more than the cost of a low milage 5 year old car and insurance.
