My 2000 X 95K mile Fiat Multipla has been a brilliant car, reliable, spacious and fun to drive but it was getting a bit past-it so I decided to replace it. I was sorely tempted to get another but decided to get something a bit bigger, safer and more luxurious so I got a Mitsubishi Grandis the same this.

Compared to the multipla.
On the plus side
It has a leather interior, a built in DVD player to keep the kids happier, more airbags/crash protection, lots of space, its faster, has more grip (235 x18"tyres) better looking(not hard), has a higher towing capacity and is(mostly) better made.
On the negative side
It feels like a bit of a tank, has the cheapest/flimsiest handbrake known to man and has no power sockets in the back. However the main downside is the engine, it is the VW 2.0l Td, it has more power and torque than the 1.9l Fiat diesel but it is much louder, rougher and more laggy.
Overall I am happy with our choice and I am sure I will get used to the engine.
One thing I am considering is having it chipped but I wondered will that make it even more loud, rough and laggy and is it likely to affect the reliability of the engine/drive train?

Maybe you can just sound deaden under the carpet and underlay with dynamatt near the firewall and gearbox. It's not paint on stuff but it makes a huge difference and is removable if need be. Most of the car audio guys use it to good effect... smile

Sounds like an interesting idea, it could help the noise but won't do a lot for the vibes through the pedals and steering, I noticed the other day that the fog-lights vibrate at idle. It is a pity that the crap engine spoils an otherwise decent car.
