Corrado VR6 Turbo
Discussion
Hi
I've been a lurker on PH for a while now, but today was the first time I've looked through the Reader's cars section, and what do I find? Three Corrados on the 1st page!! I had no idea they were so popular, so it would be rude not to introduce mine aswell!
I've owned it for over 4 years and during this time, the engine, brakes and chassis have all been very extensively modified.
I've kept the car looking original, bar a few minor cosmetic changes as I like the subtle approach to car modifying....
.....but the oily bits underneath the unassuming exterior are very different.
3 litre rebuild with forged low compression pistons....
....and a Garrett GT30R turbo.
I chose the GT30R for it's quick spooling properties for a big torque spread, rather than pub horsepower. The VR6 engine's huge exhaust flow and a turbo are a match made in heaven. This is no laggy, torque steering, wheelspinning embarrassment. It's a genuinely usable and rapid car. Obviously the brakes and chassis have been beefed up to cope and the gearbox has a torsen diff in it.
The engine bay looks nothing like a VR6 now, but it's in there somewhere.....the rocker cover is basically how big the 3.0 block is. It's a masterpeice of engine packaging. A true classic, even if Lancia designed the original VR engine layout.
Currently it's making 350hp with 340lb/ft torque running 11psi of boost. It'll do 500hp no problem, but that's a little excessive for a FWD road car.
Cheers

LOL, I do don't I :-)
Cheers again folks. It's nice to get opinions from fellow car buffs, good or bad. The car is very easy to return back to stock and that was intentional, but the 80s handling and power needed bringing into the 21st century imo.
Corrado Run, I can definitely recommend a turbo, although you don't have to go to the same trouble and expense with the engine as I did. A decent stainless steel head spacer works well too. The standard VR6 internals can handle 450-500hp easily enough. You can also pick up a new Garrett T3/T4 for about £500 now. Cheap power!
It's amusing in a straight line as it currently has 290hp per tonne. I'm not trying to boast, but not many of the road cars I encounter on a daily basis can match it's in-gear punch, especially as it's on full boost by 3000rpm and holds it till 7000rpm. The gearing is a bit short to be chasing 911s past 150mph though......but wasting a 911 (997 C2) from 30 to 100mph is proving the point adequately enough I feel :-) I did have an interesting tussle with a Noble M300 across some B roads, but that car can do things mine can't on those roads, so he annihilated me, LOL!
