Welcome - a great car.

Not sure that much goes wrong provided it has been serviced regularly and the turbo has been given time to spool down after hard driving before the engine is switched off. Get that wrong and the bearings in the turbo don't get oil, overheat and burn out.

Otherwise, I had a 215bhp UK model for 3 years with no problems at all. Now on my second.

Enjoy

I have had 2 scoobys , 1 uk and 1 type R STI, beware of fast standing starts unless you like replacing clutches every 10K . otherwise pretty well bulletproof. You will soon habitually run the engine for 2 minutes before turning off to protect the turbo.

The ignitors (individual coils for each cylinder) tend to break down after 50-60K miles - this leads to stuttering under heavy acceleration.
Rear wheel bearings die after heavy prolonged abuse
Check driver's side cam cover for weeping gasket.
While all these are common problems, none of them are a big deal & easily fixed...

Also echo the comments on letting the turbo cool down. On my second scooby now - 1st one was still going strong after 75K thrashed miles. (On 3rd clutch by this stage - well it was a company car, so I did many standing starts )

A mate of mine killed his gearbox which was incredibly expensive, so have a good look at that. although this car was an imported 'carpark racer' (whatever that is) with a crazy-short ratio box (0-60 in a blink, flat out at 115) so might not be relevant.

Another mate wrote his off on a wet bend - they might corner like they're on rails, but (and i was surprised by this) they actually aren't. this was even more expensive than the gearbox. somehow.

crap stories both. sorry for wasting your time!

Hi there..
Hope you're happy with the scoob so far..
Just wondering if you've discovered the scoobynet site yet..?
Was a good source of info whilst I had mine..

- engine oil I used to run 'Shell Helix Ultra' but don't use the 0w it's too thin, use 5w.. this was also a dealership recommendation.

- Another tip, try and always use superplus unleaded or Optimax.. there have been some rare stores of the engines not liking normal 95RON but how true these are who knows... but 97 or Optimax run better anyway..

Some of the Import Co's can supply xlated manuals.. but can't find the Co I was thinking of.. you could try on scoobynet..

Cheers
