Shock Horror - A Caravan!

Well i bought this caravan knowing it needed work doing to it. Its a Carlight. They have a reputation for rolls royce like build quality. Its fantastic.

In good condition, the older ones will set you back about £2k. This one cost me £400. It needs a respray and a bit of a clean up and a few odd jobs for the summer. Its a good winter project to keep me entertained though, and it will be good for le mans come June

They have their place.. sheltering me from the elements at the track or chained to the back of a banger for caravan banger racing.

Not being familiar with caravans is it from the 1950's / 1960's?
If so a big 1960's BMC farina like an Austin westminster to tow it with would be good. Then it would have a kind of retro cool appeal (if possible with a caravan other than an airstream), rather than it just being an old caravan, classic though it may be.
As someone who spent holidays with their grand parents in a caravan I quite like it.
I am sure there will be lots of bash 'em & smash comments, but it looks like cheap weekends away, which cannot be knocked.

Good and Bad news today.

We have found out that the bit of a patch in the bathroom is indeed damp and needs repairing in the near future, same goes for the front right panel in the lounge and it looks like a new panel will be required for the back right side where the bit of rot is.

Undeterred, I had a very polite chap just knock on our door, enquiring if i was actually selling it, and for how much? Turns out him and his dad are big carlight fans and were interested in buying it as "its not the sort of thing you see on everyones driveway"

He got that right

So the damp is a bit unlucky, but the positive comments from this chappie have made me determined to carry on with the project.

Ive just fired off an email to carlight for possible prices for replacement panels. I'll make sure im sitting down for when they tell me the prices

It won't just be the 'bathroom'. There'll be damp on the back off all the boards, timber frame etc. Body mounting points solid? More nould spores floating around than you'll believe. If you've the blokes number who enquired about it, sell it.

Some sites I hear are charging £30-£40 plus a night now for a caravan. Not cheap

its actually pretty solid. Theres not much damp at all.

The caravan is now round the back of the house, after a job maneuvering it round there.

just ordered a winter cover for the caravan, to drop anymore damp from getting in over the next few months.

Theres not much more i can do to it untill the nice weather again now. Perhaps a few interior improvements, and that will be it.

The plan is perhaps to take a week off around the end of march time, and have a really good go at sorting things, in time for Le Mans come June. We have a local caravan shop that can do things like the re-sealing.
