Alright chaps,
I'm a ship-jumper from austin-rover.co.uk. Signed up cos of the sterling work you're all doing for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
My everyday car is a VW Polo Mk 4 1.6 but I'm trying to get shot of it. My next car will hopefully be a Rover R8 216 GTi twin cam, insurance permitting (I can get very boring on the subject of Rovers, but surprisingly I don't have a beard).
Along with two mates I'm doing Home2Rome 2006 in a BMW E30 320 with knackered brakes, so wish us luck!
Cheers,
Russell

hi mig
Been in a polo 1400 and was always suprised at how it went and rode. You could probably roast chestnuts with the heating system as well. I will always remember the blow torch type heat that fired out of the dash vents.
Rovers rock. They might not be fashionable but they do shift.
Eons ago, we had one of the first 216's to come into the Uk. That car was great. As it was one of the first built there where a few comical problems- but it was still a nice car. We also had an 827 vittesse. That was a real plush ride & would sit at 135mph all day long. Maybe its not fashionable to drive rovers nowadays, but we owned an MG maestro with the uber kitch talking computer, 2000cc Montego Vandem plas, 1600cc montego, 216, 827 vittesse and all, -without doubt- where very good cars.
If memory is right, a new montego vandem plas was closely priced to the jag xj6.
You could even turn up at a rover dealer with a crisp packet, say you liked the colour and wanted your montego painted in that very same colour. Rover would then take your crisp packet, match the colour & paint your new vandem plas.
One day & hopefully, i will pick up a vandas plas for £100 and do a resto.
Anyway, im probably going to nuked stupid for saying i like rovers, but i do like them

Benzo,
Get your ass over to www.austin-rover.co.uk. You'll like it!
It's unfashionable to like Rovers, but it's unfashionable to be a petrolhead full stop. I like them because they're interesting and quirky and you get a lot of car for your money. A 216 GTI has 130bhp and you can pick them up for peanuts (as I hope to when I get shot of the VW). Compare that to the 75bhp 8v single cam pig iron lump in the front of my Pogo (so called because of the "interesting" damping) and you can see why I prefer one t'other.
The BMW is a weird machine to get used to, but I can never get tired of that straight-six roar, even spoiled as it is by the banging of tappets.
Cheers for the messages anyway guys.

Well, my feelings are best summed up by saying that I felt it was enjoyable but there was room for improvement in many aspects of the rally. I shan't say any more than that.
We used a Granada 2.0GL, bought for £77 from a builder in Merthyr Tydfil. By the time we were done with it, it looked like this:
Shame it broke down at the start of Day 2, really! Never mind though.

Thinking of doing this next year. Was going to do the scumball but no places left so Czechwrecks might be the next best thing.
We were also thinking of doing the Scumball next year... but come on, a £300 budget for a car is EASY! And they impose a max engine size of 2 litres on entrants, so unless we can find a Cossie or a Bishi for £300, we'd struggle to satisfy our need for speed.
We're hoping to do S2N next year in a 24v Carlton or Senator
S2N is another StreetSafari rally a bit like CzechWrecks and Home2Rome. Check out www.staples2naples.com.
Someone from a-r.co.uk is doing it in a Rover 800 with "Cock Piss Partridge" sprayed down the side...

The scumball sounds like fun.
Im also looking for a cheap sierra for trackday antics, any tips as to where I can pick up a cheap car?
Edit:
Why? I have a stg3 'big valve' pinto head, twin forty dellorto's, fast road cam & 421 manifold sitting in the garage. Bolted up, this should give about 150bhp in a RWD car which should be fine for track days. All i need is a cheap 2 litre sierra!

It certainly is.
I must be VERY unfashionable then cos I love 'em! I have a '94 420 GSi Turbo which I love. The engine has been breathed upon somewhat and certainly surprises some superior cars (like the 300bhp Delta Integrale on the way to Le Mans...!)
www.rovertech.net is my home, I think I've seen a bit of the Austin-Rover site but am not a frequent visitor.
That E30 looks cool, best of luck with the rally but what about those dodgy brakes... sounds a bit dangerous!!!
