Hey guys. Here is my Mk1 Golf I have spent the past 6 months building. The theme is weight loss and I have done all the work myself. The original weight was 850kg and I've got it down to 660kg.

If you fancy a look at all the work I have done www.no-rice.com/forum/index.php?p=vt&tid=7680

The engine is a 2L 16v with twin 40 Webers and I have rebuilt and used my 1600 close ratio gearbox. It tops out around 100-110 but gets there rather quickly, which is what I aim for (hillclimb influence).

Great little car that one sir, good work.

As the great Colin Chapman said - "just add lightness."

very very nice mate, bet she goes like a dream, and a great set up with the box and engine, a mate has the same and its what you want for driving these days.

enjoy!

Thanks guys

I made my own lower front cross brace the other day, mainly because I had nothing better to do at the time.

It has tightened the steering up big time. The car feels much more point and shoot now. I can't begin to imagine how much flex there was beforehand. Defo worth doing to any Mk1!

Finished reading the thread yesterday, great car
Uhm, was just reading your other thread about wanting to die, etc.. Hope you can fix it. But as a lot of people have already said, cars can be replaced. Shame really, it was your P&J and a really great piece of engineering. Please keep us updated if you're going to rebuild it.

Grtz and a lot of succes

Lovely job, really nice.

Thought I recognised the locations in the pics, only when I read through the build diary I realised you were in Eastbourne. Hope to see you around sometime.

Jelly,

I sat the other evening and read the entire build thread.. fantastic work, your chase for weight loss is applaudable (sp!?!?)

We've built a few cars in which we've chased light weight, but not quite to the extreme that you have taken.. Good work sir!

btw, one of our cars is 680kg, 20 kg's heavier than the golf... with a 383ci SBC in it

Think you'll find the cage, unfortunately, performed very well.

just lucky it went over sideways, and didnt have a heavy front ender. and i would have happily rolled that car with that cage (as std!) sideways. just those mods woud have made matters worse if in a heavy front ender (shunt or flip)

I'll second that.

Jelly, only just realised what has happened. Compeletely gutted for you. I know how you feel putting so much effort into something only to lose it before you've had chance to enjoy it to it's full potential. Hope you find another shell and the motivation to do it all over again as it was a cracking looking car.
