Here's my situation -

I want to get myself a decent car for my 30th birthday, which is 8 months or so away, and at the moment have an incredibly reliable but very very slow mondeo diesel, which is fine if you like that sort of thing, but i'm getting tired of it.

So, I was thinking what I'd do is flog the mondy (200 quid if you want it) and get myself something that's back wheel drive and fast(er) to amuse myself until January.

Easy so far....... but i'm only going to spend a grand or so.

I'm handy enough with the spanners but don't want to be rebuilding engines if i can possibly help it. That said, reliability isn't my main concern. And I work offshore so I'm only in the country every other month, so fuel economy isn't an issue either.

Any thoughts?
Phil

Long shot if you can find a good one, Opel Manta GTE, but get the Coupé not the hatch back. Still a good looking car, totally tunable, rear wheel drive, long wheel base and low to the ground. Had loads of fun in one of those a few years ago, ahhh memories. Where is that exchange and mart.............

The only thing ya want is an Alfa 75.......either 2.0litre or 3.0litre, LSD 50:50 weight distribution with either 150 or 185bhp! I've had two, one with 204bhp V6, I've also looned around in a GTE (underpowered.....but bought for £100) and two MK2 Grannys (2.3 and 2.8V6....bought for £50) and for sheer loonage and back end sliding, you can't beat the Alfa!

Toyota MR2 Mk1? Well within budget, and very reliable, not to mention a lot of fun

I fancied one of the old (pre 92ish) 325i BMWs, but a look through autotrader doesn't seem to throw very much up. The newer shape ones are cheap though. (6 cylinder 320s for about 600 quid)

I'm back in civilisation in a couple of weeks, and then i can find myself an ACTUAL car. S'pose I ought to post a picture of it when I do. (sideways, obviously....)

My mate had a 325i, nice motor but no LSD.......the V6 75 would kill it, infact the 4 pot probably would as well! Beware the 320 tho' as they suck more juice than the 2.5, and are nowhere near as fast!

7 series BMW with 3/3.5ltr (or V8 manual if you can locate one) engine and manual gearbox. Come with LSD and a nice long wheel base

If you're not too bothered, strip the interior out completely and stiffen the ride up (all you'll end up doing 360 spin when it snaps in opposite direction)

E32's can be had for well under a grand leaving plenty of scope for mods....

Easy find an old Firebird or Camaro for that sort of money for a bit of tyre smoking V8 action, the mechanics are very simple and perfect for the home mechanic and the parts are very cheap. Should be easy enough to get rid of if you decide you want to return to a sensible car.

My 1987 635csi is great fun, especially in the wet - very predictable and easy to control! You can pick one up off e-Bay for less than a grand (although mine was considerably more!!), but for that sort of money the wings will almost certainly need replacing. Make sure you get one with an LSD. And if you're planning do go "dry drifting" beware of metric tyres - they cost a sodding fortune.

Another Vote for the s13 am Toying with the idea of getting one myself for cheap loonage (However my father in Law is a member of the sxoc and has spend lots (relatively speaking) on making his go faster and stop quicker so I reckon I could get it fairly nice swiping his cast offs )

On another note, if your Mundano is an Estate with any MoT on it I will give you £200 for it. Me Mum has a Petrol Pug 405 Estate which I want to change for a Diesesal for the fuel Economy and the Pug has just past its MOT so has 12 months ticket on it and is the time to sell it.

200SX - is there even anything else to seriously consider? One of those or maybe an MkII MR2, but the SX will be more fun.

Well outside your budget, but I searched for one to see just how much they were going for. Considered by many to be the ultimate drift machine that you can drive on the street - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOYOTA-COROLLA-

You need a BMW 325s still command quite a high price for something decent.
I would go for a 5, e28 or e34, 535 in either. Manual, LSD. Plenty of e34s around like that but if you find a nice e28 snap it up as you will have that live rear axle and plenty of oversteer at every corner.
