Just thought you all might like to see my new toy!

Its a 1977 Peterbilt 352.
It runs a 400bhp Cummins NCT14 (14 litre), and has an Eaton Fuller 13 speed box. It carries 1000 litres of diesel and has a "Power Shot" LPG system. It requires no speed limiter due to its age, and tops out at 103mph.

I bought it in the UK of a guy who had it imported, the lights were changed, mudgaurds fitted and it had been plated and registed.

Good God, pushing £950 to fill the tank! How far can these things go on a tank of juice anyway?

Modern HGVs will run at 8mpg, depending on load. Cummins engines of this age (from experience with ERFs) will return 3mpg, again dependent on load. Take it easy and you'll get 4. (BTW, is that an Eaton Twin Splitter?)

5th wheel heights are the same I do believe, but you can drive this on a standard car licence as is, you need an HGV1 to pull a trailer. You'll also need tacho and speed limiter if you use it to haul a trailer.

The new-ish motors in my fleet are returning around 7.5 - 8 mpg at 44 tons, this motor runs at 41 tons and returns around 5.5 - 6 mpg

No, its an Eaton Fuller 13 speed constant mesh. Basically a 4 over 4 with a crawler and splits only on the top 4.

At present I'm buying Diesel at 0.82 pence per litre + vat (I'm vat registered so get that back)so to fill her up costs around £820.00, and at 6 mpg it will travel around 1300 miles on a full tank.

Very cool
Will this tow a European trailer? Or are American trailers different in the way they hook up?

There is no difference in the way the American trailers attach, however the American tractor is all 12 volt whereas the European trailers are all 24 volt. There are a couple of ways around this, you could just change the bulbs in the trailer to 12 volt, a bit of a pain and what happens when you come across a trailer fitted with LED's? You could change the truck to 24 volts, MAJOR HEADACHE! so I found the solution here: www.secamerica.com/euro_trailer_converter.html
A tad on the expensive side at just under $850.00 inc shipping & taxes, but a ready made solution to a vexing problem.

To use the truck for haulage purposes a Tachograph has to be fitted, which it has, but the age of the vehicle means it is exempt from having to have a speed limiter fitted. Hence top speed is 103 mph, fully freighted at 41 ton it will do 80mph (allegedly)

Cheers, I'd love to see some pics of the inside.
Probably got more features than my house

I think you'd be a little dissapointed with the interior, yes its got Air Con, power steering, front and rear heaters, and air seats, but thats it. Remember its a '77, and compared to what we were driving back then its a dream. I'll post some interior shots as soon as I can.
It does have some rather odd things on it, Air operated windows, winscreen washers and wipers, and an air operated fifth wheel controled from inside the cab.

I'm affraid not. You would require a LGV-C (what used to be a class 3)licence to drive just the unit. There used to be a requirement for the fifth wheel to be inoperable, but that has been discontinued, but to drive a ridgid vehicle of over 7.5 tons gross you are required to hold a LGV-C, regardless of what you intend to use the vehicle for.
